It would change things. If you could only carry 10 round mags with your carry gun, you might be more likely to carry a larger caliber or a smaller gun. Part of the reason I carry 9mm is that I have the ability to carry more ammo in the gun and in the spare magazine(s). I would predict more new carry guns with 10 round max capacity that would either be smaller or use 45 acp instead of 9mm.

You may not change your carry gun if you are used to it.

And I certainly hope nothing like that ever happens in Texas.

If shot placement was the over-riding factor as you suggest, then why not carry 22LR? You get the bonus of maximum capacity too.
Well, technically 22 LR penetrates good enough and can easily kill with good shot placement. It just doesn't do as much damage in general so if your shot placement is off a bit, you may not see the best results as quickly as you would like. However, a lot of people do carry 22 LR in smaller guns or revolvers for various reasons.

Since it is a rimmed cartridge, 22 LR doesn't offer better capacity in most guns. If you want to compare, look at 5.7X28. Some people do like guns in that caliber. I also saw an article that said 25 Auto was originally developed to mimic 22 LR capability in a center fire cartridge.

Re: .45ACP is still my choice for handgun caliber

Why do people complain about this argument appearing "again" while happily posting their own opinion/judgement? :biggrinjester:

Re: .45ACP is still my choice for handgun caliber

So, if you carry 45, what do you carry?

I have an XDs in 45, but I always wanted 10 rounds mag capacity or more. The main options I can think of are a G21, an XD, or S&W M&P. I have carried the XD mod 2 45. It is okay, but I never was quite happy with it. I haven't seen the Sig P320 in 45, not sure what size that gun is. I would love to see FN make a compact version of the FNX-45 with a 10 round mag, but I am not sure they will ever do so. CZ doesn't make a 97 Phantom yet so I don't have that option. Anyone carry a Glock 30?

Just curious what you see as you best options in 45 carry.

That's a bit of a misrepresentation.

The argument isn't that only 9mm has improved with technology, but that given the advances in hollow point design, you're now seeing similar results from modern 9mm defensive ammo that you're seeing from modern .45 ammo in testing, whereas before that wasn't always the case.

So if both rounds are preforming similarly, it makes less sense to choose the one with higher recoil, lower capacity, and higher cost over something that has similar performance that you can carry more of and shoot more accurately/quicker in the same size gun.

But TAM had it really right: in the end a rifle>all handgun calibers, and we only carry pistols because they're easier to drag around all day.
I think it has been posted here before, but there were statistical studies of calibers used in actual shootings. I believe the findings were there was no statistical difference in performance of anything 9mm and up. Of course, a lot of details don't show up in statistics, but I would say that means shoot the gun you are comfortable with, practice with it, and hit your target if you have to use it.

If I had the spare change, I would get one.

I got a Coonan 1911 instead.

Re: .45ACP is still my choice for handgun caliber

IMO, overpenetration has become too big a focus on this stuff. I think making sure you can shoot your chosen carry gun well and hit your target are more important (and use reliable self defense ammo). Misses are far more dangerous down range than over penetrating rounds though I wouldn't want to get hit by either.

That said, you can do that with 9mm, 45 acp, 357 magnum or whatever fits you best. I like 45 ACP, I just find that the 9mm pistols have good capacity in a good size/weight for carry. However, I am always on the watch for a better option for 45. I was sort of hoping FN would make an FNX-45 compact. I like that pistol.
