20 gauge might be a bit light in the pants for waterfowl, but it will do well for everything else you've mentioned in this thread.

I grew up using a 20 gauge bolt action (I still have it). I hunted rabbits, squirrels, quail and everything else alongside my older relatives and their 12 gauges without giving up anything to their bigger guns.
