I believe there is a republican caucus meeting this morning to discuss that. Unfortunately, I believe Straus has JUST enough republicans in his pocket to side with the democrats and retain his position. I hope I am wrong.

I saw some discussions about a "rule change" that would mean that just the majority party would vote for the speaker. That could actually mean that Strauss could be replaced. Not sure a rule change could happen though...
Careful what you wish for. We may not always be in the majority. I fear this with the simple majority vote for Supreme Court Justices now.
I'm actually not wishing one way or the other....just reporting what I saw fly by....I would, however, not mind if Strauss were replaced.

Jed Judson, seems to be gearing up for another try in his district, for those of you who live there. I wish I could help him out even those I live just outside of it.

Re: 2017 Special Session called

the forced annexation has a possibility, not sure
vouchers of some sort for special needs
I think both of these also have a possibility, as long as they don't try to add any weird amendments.

I doubt this is more than some enemy spreading rumors. Abbott already announced that this would be the only special session when he called it. He said if they could not get his agenda done during that time, they weren't "trying" (I read that as they would not ever agree).
I think it was someone on the Ethics and Investigations Committee? I can't remember, I'd been listening to some Land Use type of Committee on the Annexation Bill and when they were done I popped over to see what the other one was talking about. It was boring so I went to Doctor Who. Gotta have something on while I work on jewelry. Everyone seemed to agree that he had said it. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks.
This week is going to be interesting, we'll finally see if people are going to show up and work. I can understand the Senate not being there for the first part of the week, but by the end of the week the House had sent over quite a few bills, they could have been working, and why were there NO committees meeting? NONE!

That would be really not smart. It wouldn't be hard to spin that in a really bad light...
"Greg Abbot is wasting your tax dollars with useless special sessions!"
While that would be true if they were getting stuff done....
I have a feeling he will actually be able to get away with it if he wants to...

(the good news in this whole mess is they aren't reaching into our pockets or anywhere else....)

Re: 2017 Special Session called

I would love to be able to keep my taxpayer money to use for my own healthcare expenses....'course I would have loved to have been able to keep my tax money to use to homeschool my kids, but I figured as long as they were leaving me alone and keeping their nose out of my home, it was worth the expense.

I want to use public transportation money to buy myself a private car.
We are forced to pay ISD property taxes every year since we've lived in Texas and have never had, nor ever will have, any family member in the local schools. Why can't we have a say in these taxes we are forced to pay for the public schooling of the spawn of other folk? Just askin'.....
You do have a say in the taxes. You can vote on them if they get too high and you can vote for members of the school board. You can even run for the school board and have a more direct say, both on the taxes and on how they are spent.
I don't think that the taxpayers should pay for my child's private school education, but I do think that I ought to be able to spend MY ISD tax money on a private eductation instead of paying it to the school district......if that's what I want to do. It's still MY money, not TAXPAYER money, right up to the point where my check is cashed.

I don't think the original "School Choice" bill stands a chance. Too many people are against it. Including most homeschoolers.
The compromise bill, "School Choice for Special Needs Students" does seem to have a pretty good chance of passing.

Re: 2017 Special Session called

I'm just trying to figure out why nothing is happening on camera? The Senate had a big argument the first day back about a committee meeting that day, the committee won the right to meet, and apparently met off camera? Then there's been one or two other meetings of committees that haven't been on camera, and the House webpage says they are suppose to have met yesterday and today and it hasn't been on camera? And I've checked just a few mins after time.
