Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
Energy expert debunks green narrative on Texas SPOILER ALERT: Wind power let us down, bigtime. I think that it's a reminder of what role renewables play: they're free energy, but they are not reliable. We have sufficient fossil fuel backups on paper, but every type, including the nukes, failed. We ...

Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
The areas Texas not covered by ERCOT were barely affected. Most outages were short: minute to a few hours. Very, very interesting. El Paso was one o’ those areas, but it wasn’t as cold and it didn’t last as long as the cold in the middle of the state. There were public warnings and requests to cons...

Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
AS of today, the month of February has cost me $150 for 267 kwh. $12 of that is a Visa fee (Griddy will only take credit card payments, and I'm using this rough patch for them to beat the drum for ACH again). Given the challenges that others have faced, I consider myself very lucky.

https://www.reuters.com/article/europe-electricity-idUSL8N2KN312 Power in Germany, where they are struggling with the poor power factor of wind and solar to cope with heating demands, was $56/MWh yesterday. That is their norm, versus an average of $13-15 on ERCOT's grid. AOC is trying to cherry pic...

Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
I'm focused upon the temperatures in Midland, since I assume that once temps in the Permian Basis stay above freezing, natural gas will start to flow and energy prices will come down. That's a wild guess, so anyone's insight is more than welcome.

Re: Electricity Providers
I'm actually doing okay on Griddy; this month is rough, currently $0.486/kwh for $130 on 267 kwh, of which $10 is a credit card fee (they don't have ACH payments, which is my one real gripe with them). I've been stuck in a hospital since Saturday, so I basically turned everything off. My plan is to ...

Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
Blaming heat pumps is not exactly correct or fair. Heat pumps are the overhwelming best choice for heating/cooling, but not the way that they are commonly (read "cheaply") done in Texas. I learned about them because my relatives in Nebraska, very old farming people, used one to heat their ...

Re: Stay Warm and Safe the Next Few Days
Really interesting experience. I'm the odd Griddy customer that didn't leave. I'm stuck at the hospital regardless, so I just want my house warm enough to keep my plants alive. I have a network thermostat, so I can monitor my house from work, and my plan is to watch the ERCOT spot price and run the ...

Re: Nobody but Sheila Jackson Lee
I'd love to see Dan Crenshaw introduce a bill which mirrors this one wherein the right to own a gun is replaced by the right to vote or serve on a jury. Democrats hold very different views on restrictions pertaining to rights that they support. :iagree: The right to vote is MUCH more dangerous than...

Re: The Reddit short squeeze
This is a really good primer on the mechanics of taking a short position on a stock. Thank you for that. Personally, I like to take long positions, so my option activity is usually limited to either buying straight calls or selling covered calls. But I'm not sure that what you've written contradict...

I disagree with nearly everything that I have seen written about this story. I follow the idiots on r/WSB, and need to stress that there is a mix of reasonable and savvy young investors, people there for the entertainment, and complete fools. It is not some kind of collective; there is no cohesive e...

Re: The .45 is Unquestionably Superior to the 9mm
I believe that during the Battle Off Samar during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, several fighter-bomber pilots who was out of every other sort of ammo fired their .38 revolvers at the IJN surface forces, which eventually withdrew. So depending upon one's subjective allotment of credit to the various weap...
