I grew up taught to be a good scout (more of the boy variety - "be prepared"), and was wondering what to bring/not to bring to Forum Day as we are new to this.

Here is a synopsis of what I have gathered from reading here and what has been suggested via my PM to CompVest who encouraged me to take it to the board...

Guns
All the ammo you can afford
eye protection
ear protection
extra magazines
mag pouches
(speed loaders if wheel guns)
(ammo bag if wheel gun)
Strong side outside the waistband holster(s)
snacks and non alcoholic drinks if you should desire
rain gear (to scare the clouds away)
I am guessing sunscreen and maybe some skeeter spray
maybe a sherpa to haul your gear

Feel free to add to this those of you that are "experienced" so us neophytes may learn - this is gonna be a LONG week - I am so excited!

long sleeved, closed neck shirt
bandaids (somebody will get a slide bite)
refillable water bottle (there are usually watering stations at the bays)

They are suggesting FRS radios with earpiece, too.

• Paper and pen, or a cell phone that you can use to take audio notes.
• Camera, though I do not recommend taking photos of people without their permission. The range is not a public place in the legal sense.
• Solid shoes, not sandals or flip-flops. The grass is pretty thick and you don't necessarily want to become acquainted with the little critters that live in it.

Good point too, the brass flying is sometimes hot - and can be uncomfortable on bare skin.

Nyeh. The brass comes and goes quickly (though you are on the beam with the closed-neck collared shirt). The fleas and ticks not so much.

I hope the mag pouches are not too critical - I haven't picked any up yet - I usually keep one in my front pocket for now ...

It's unfortunate that PRODEFENSE went belly-up. They were good for mag pouches and holsters.

Cargo pants work pretty well if you're not trying to get your IDPA COF times below 10 seconds.

Unfortunately, we have all of that stuff packed (although our owb holsters aren't that great).

Anyone know a good Sherpa?

Heads-up: We just discovered that the Cobra FRS radios use a 2.5-mm (micro) jack, rather than the 3.5 (mini). It's the same size as most cell phones. We'll have to pick up some adapters this week (our current adapters go the wrong direction).

Just speaking from my own experience - I've had a hot brass casing go down the front of my shirt one time, bounce off my forehead, off my arm and another fell into the opening of croc shoes I was wearing another time. All were hot enough to leave a blister.

The difference in shooting during these forums --and routine range practice is -- it will not only be your own brass flying around.

There will be a line of people standing immediately beside each other (sometimes within 3 feet or so) and when shooting mulitple rounds, the guns do get hot pretty quickly.

Just a caution -- especially to the Ladies, don't dress to be cute! Be comfortable, but plan to Cover up!!

The Blackhawk kydex mag holsters available at most Academy stores for about $15 work well with double-stack mags. I use a pair with Glock mags for IDPA - great retention and quick draw.

Yeah, I know I need to pick some up soon. But I have been focusing my $$$ lately on other gear - like holsters. Plus, right now I have 250 rounds - but I really want to pick some more up before Saturday.

In that case, I'll add: A mask for the cameras....

We always throw some of those folding chairs into the trunk, just in case. Sometimes you can grab a picnic bench, other times they get pretty full. It can be kind of tough standing up all day.
