Texas police officer accidentally kills woman while shooting at dog

#1

Post by Frankie »

I’m putting this in the self defense section because from what I read, he was attempting to stop a aggressive dog that was charging him.

Seems he was on a routine welfare check when things went wrong.

I know my father drove into my head to always know what was behind my target. If you are not sure it is safe, you do not pull the trigger. From. BB gun to center fire calibers.

First time he fired his gun, not at a range.

I assumed firing at a dog you would be shooting down.

Yeah, watched the video. She was lying on the ground.
It was a welfare check of a homeless woman.

Very sad for everyone.

Dog was moving around. Backed away, but he shot right where she was.

On the job by himself for just a month. Should be his last month as he obviously is a danger to the public.
According to Police Chief Will Johnson, the officer had undergone eight hours of training for canine encounters, as well as mandatory firearms training.

The training didn’t work Chief.

Exactly. One of the things that EVERY police officer candidate should be asked is: DO YOU HAVE AN IRRATIONAL FEAR OF DOGS?

I can't count the number of ridiculous dog shootings I've read about over the years. Some of them debated on this forum.

NOTHING will happen to this LEO. A few years ago, an LEO from the same department (on probation) shot and killed a suspect who had broken into a car dealership. As a plan was being formed to corner the suspect and take him alive, the rookie walked in, alone, and wound up killing him. He was fired, but wasn't prosecuted. Now, two other LEO's from the same department are in the news from discharging their weapons. What's it going to take to fix this?

I'm confused on this one because that officer had a lot of other resources at his disposal. I've seen some videos where they are 'Tazer Happy".

I don't know, guess I would of handled it differently plus I don't like Dog Killers or even attempted ones.

He completely panicked in the situation, he ran backwards just firing rounds without aiming :confused5 Come on if your first choice was to use the firearms at least stand your ground and aim?

Feel terrible for the woman and her family, I wish them the best in the future.

I'm beginning to suspect the canine encounter training officers receive is not training on how to deescalate or avoid shooting dogs. It happens too often and the canine isn't required to charge the officer to get the treatment.

It's just ridiculous 'some' of the shootings that occur. I certainly understand the need for an officer to protect him/herself from an attack (or threat) of a large breed, viscous dog.

But there are too many officers with an irrational fear of dogs. This leads them to shooting the animal instead of using pepper spray (like thousands of Postal Workers and UPS drivers do) or some other less than lethal method.

IF shooting is their first response to a dog....I have to wonder what it will be when interacting with humans. Sheeesh.

Good to hear from you. Hope you and your wonderful Wife are doing well.

I am retired now and trying to catch up on things that need doing around the property.

Want to let you know that the Shotgun you sold my Brother (Charles Daly) is being put to good use and he absolutely loves it.

Take care my friend and stay in touch.
