A 13-year-old male in Brown County on Sunday allegedly shot a man assaulting the teen's grandmother, according to a Brown County Sheriff's Office news release.

The man sustained a gunshot wound to his lower back from a 30-caliber rifle and was transported by helicopter to an out-of-town hospital, the release said.

Deputies responding in the afternoon to a domestic disturbance on County Road 147 learned that the man "had been shot while actively assaulting his mother," the release said. The woman is the grandmother of the teenager who shot the suspect.

The teen shot the man "because he was fearful that his grandmother was going to be killed," the release said.

The relationship between the teen and the man was not given.

The man also allegedly threatened several family members, including a juvenile, the release said.
