WPB,FL Video, 44 secs:Man shoots own hand w/ modded Glock 17
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fcg543Jow
The above video is 44 seconds long and takes place at a shooting range
in West Palm Beach, FL.
IIRC, this was a modified Glock 17 with a "select fire" ability, and a handle
near the muzzle. Although I could not clearly see it, apparently the front handle
detached from the weapon just as the shooter fired a 2 or 3 round burst.
He put 1 or more rounds through his hand.
Feel free to comment on such mods, shooter safety, aftermath, whatever.

Wow...I don't think there is much to say about this one other than he didn't yell expletives as I would have expected.

Re: WPB,FL Video, 44 secs:Man shoots own hand w/ modded Gloc
I'm not seeing that he put any rounds "through" his hand. He's opening and closing it like it stings. I don't see how flexing could be done with a .38" hole in it.
This looks more like a powder burn to me. I can see that front handle slipping off the front and then his hand getting burned by the gasses.
Regardless, this missed the Darwid awards show by not much.

I have a friend whose daughter shot herself through her hand with a 9mm JHP, required a few surgerys and then a lot of rehab. I would say he is lucky he didnt get anythign worse then he did.
Do people really use forgrips on pistols though? seems like it would be a bad idea

ATF has long held that by installing a vertical fore grip on a handgun, the handgun is no longer designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand. Therefore, if individuals install a vertical fore grip on a handgun, they are “making” a firearm requiring registration with ATF’s NFA Branch. Making an unregistered “AOW” is punishable by a fine and 10 years’ imprisonment. Additionally, possession of an unregistered “AOW” is also punishable by fine and 10 years’ imprisonment.

Would someone please define the acronyms "NFA" and "AOW"?
Another question: Machine pistols such as Uzi's and Tek9's seem to require
a "2 hand" hold to fire safely. Would they be "AOW's" even though they may not
have a vertical foregrip?
TIA / SIA

You don't get the Darwin Award for shooting yourself in the hand.zero4o3 wrote:TDDude wrote:Regardless, this missed the Darwid awards show by not much.

Yes from my understanding. Same thing with AR15 pistols, those super short lever guns and the like, If you put a stock and/OR a foregrip on something with less than 16" of barrel then you've made something pretty illegal. ATF regs are very nonsensical.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Would someone please define the acronyms "NFA" and "AOW"?

When you buy one of these it's a "pistol"
Yet if they made the stock slightly longer so you could actually shoulder it, it becomes some kind of rampage killing machine. But hey I guess they have to start somewhere on their agenda of criminalizing all of us. Boiling frog theory in action.

Either way it's not a good outcome. Made me cringe

Yeaaaahhhhh, that looks like a pretty clean hole. I'm sure they had a few interesting answers for the admitting office at Good Sam Medical Center's ER. Not to mention a visit from West Palm's finest. I lived in Palm Beach County for 12 years and I can tell you if something odd, strange or weird happens in the world, it has a Florida angle to it.
Re: WPB,FL Video, 44 secs:Man shoots own hand w/ modded Gloc
No kidding, I've sort of noticed that over the years. I still love watching "Big Trouble" Dave Berry's first novel made into a movie. Its about Miami, guns (real and squirt), hitmen, nuclear bombs, and goats.PostShooter wrote: I lived in Palm Beach County for 12 years and I can tell you if something odd, strange or weird happens in the world, it has a Florida angle to it.
Ever since watching the movie, I now get confused when I come to the airport about which lane to take. "we are arriving, but then we are going to depart".
Re: WPB,FL Video, 44 secs:Man shoots own hand w/ modded Gloc
NFA refers to the National Firearms Act of 1934. This law was passed during the the Depression and when the gangsters like Machine Gun Kelly, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde had been running around using machine guns and sub machine guns to rob bank and generally make PITA of themselves. Prior to this act you could by a Thompson Sub Machine Gun at and Browning Automatic Rifles at many hardware stores. Congress in their finite wisdom of times decided that these guns needed to be controlled so they decided to Tax the transfer of these weapons, but first had to define what the weapons were, so the classifications were divided up. Machine Guns, Destructive Devices, Short Barrel Shot Guns and Short Barrel Rifles. There were a group of weapons that did not really fall into these categories that were called "Any Other Weapons."surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Would someone please define the acronyms "NFA" and "AOW"?

These included the Ithaca Auto Burglar and some other weapons. The main difference was that the AOW only required a $5.00 transfer tax whereas the others were $200.00 to transfer the weapon. In 1934 $200.00 was a lot of money. I believe that back in the 1980s or 90s BATFE got their panties in a wad over something and decided that putting a vertical and grip on a pistols made the weapon into an AOW.
Back to the converted Glock with the hand grip. Since the Glock is a sub machine gun and fires in full auto it does not fall under the BATFE's definition as a AOW, so therefore is exempt from being required to be papered at a AOW, since it is already papered as a sub machine gun.
A pen gun is an AOW, and a shot gun built on a receiver, with a pistol grip only and a barrel less than 18 inches, that has never had a stock attached is an AOW. Take that same gun and place a butt stock on it and it becomes a short barrel shot gun and the transfer tax goes up to $200.
Clear as mud???
