NSSF president Joe Bartozzi commented on the tremendous number of background checks conducted last week:

This figure of over 687,000 background checks is truly remarkable. This year has already been shaping up to be the second strongest year for firearm sales on record, second only to 2020’s record-breaking number of 21 million background checks for a firearm sale. We anticipate, based on annual data, that firearm sales will rise during the final month of the year coinciding with hunting seasons and holiday sales. This figure, though, underscores the appetite for lawful firearm ownership in America and the resilience of the firearm and ammunition industry to meet that demand.

If the quote attributed to NSSF president Joe Bartozzi, saying that we saw 21 million NICS checks in 2020, isn't a typo and that's really what he said, then that's pretty darned embarrassing for him. As of the end of October, 2021 it's already at 33,060,676 checks; 2020 finished with a total of 39,695,315...so 21 million is only off by 18.7 million. The last year we ended with fewer than 23 million was 2014, when there were 20,968,547 NICS checks, and even 2013 hit 21 million.

In fact, I opened my NICS spreadsheet again because I was curious about something. We all know that the number of NICS checks processed isn't one-to-one indicative of really anything, but here's a little bit of trivia that might cause some far-left liberals to cringe...

From January 1, 2007 through October 31, 2021, the FBI processed a number of firearm background checks that is almost exactly equal to one check for every man, woman, and child currently living in the United States (well, documented residents, anyway). The current total population is estimated at 333.7 million, and in those 178 months the FBI ran 333,662,407 firearm background checks.

As an indication about the continually increasing volume of the checks, from July 1, 2016 through October 31, 2021--so the last 64 months, barely 5 years--the number of background checks totaled 166,252,074...which would be about half the current total population of the United States.

A tip for politicians: It ain't just people in "flyover country" who are legally buying guns, and there are probably a lot more guns in private hands than you've ever imagined.

The FBI is on top of the NICS data this month. November's data already published! We finished the month with 2,717,458 background checks. Well below the all-time record from last March (4,691,738...in fact, the month of the 2020 election and the five months afterward accounted for 23,529,790 checks, more than any year up until 2016, and more than whole of 2017...Biden's turning out to be an even better gun salesman than Obama), but 2.7 million is nothing to sneeze at.

Program to date, we've done almost 409 million firearm background checks. Per year, 2021 is already second only to 2020, and if we have 2.5 million checks in December--which would make it the lowest month this year--we'll finish with 38.3 million this year and over 411 million since the program began in November 1998.
