Pistol red dot Zero distance

#1

Post by cmgee67 »

Is there a standard distance recommended to zero a red dot? I have heard 25 yards, 15 yards, and some say 10. I figure 20-25 is a good distance as that should put you really close at shorter distances and at further distances.

Depends on your personal range habits. There is no correct answer. When I ran red dots I zeroed in at about 15 yards to shoot steel.

Sage dynamics did a good video on the 25 yard zero. Seems like the one

I do 25 yards myself. At closer distances it's good enough for any shooting you would do. Much less height over the bore than a rifle, so it doesn't really mess with anything.

I agree pistol 15 yards. AR 50 yards.. I tested my AR yesterday with my hand loads. At 100 yards I was 2 MOA low at 200 yards, I need 1 MOA up. Either way I was on target and I know the mental adjustments.

Agreed. I would zero to whatever max distance you can at your range. For me it was 15 yards at Shoot Smart.

This! I have it saved as a favorite video.

So I ultimately zeroed at 15 yards. This put me out of a 4.1” barrel Glock 48 shooting 124gr hornady xtp +p dead on at 10,15,20,25 yards as well as 50. I’m not saying this will work for everyone but in my particular case it did. Your mileage may vary. Make sure to zero with the ammo you intend on carrying. I also was shooting Remington umc 115gr and it was hitting almost the exact same spot plus or minus an inch. So it was good to find some practice ammo that hit almost exact for my particular situation

Good point on multiple issues. Zero with your carry ammo and see what POI is with your range ammo as well.

Thanks. It’s been really hard for me to find my particular hollow points that I like to carry locally. But I have seen the Remington ammo start to make a good comeback and be available. This is great for me because I can go practice live fire at the range every month even with the inflated prices.
