I just had my S&W 1911 PC returned from the factory. The Thumb Safety was kind of sloppy and it came back fine. I took it to the range today shot 80 rounds through it and brought it home to clean it. This is what it looks like field stripped and then back together. Is this normal? I will say it not on my other 1911’s.

Assembled. A little better, but I do not remember any of my 1911’s safety looking this way.

Certainly not the sign of a top tier 1911. Acceptable but not desirable.

I have sent the PC an email so we shall see what happens.

S&W doesn’t sale these cheap. Then when you complain they act like you are mentally ill. Then it takes a month to six weeks to get it there and back. I know this I will not buy anymore S&W 1911’s for me. Of course I made that decision after I bought my Wilson Combat recently. I will probably not buy much of anything now because I am pretty happy. Have a Les Baer, Wilson Combat, and Dan Wesson’s so I am through buying.

I just pray they will fix this one.

I’d be concerned that the space by the safety could cause issues with internals, stuff getting inside etc. I’m also not a fan of the looks of that safety design. For the price, I’d expect better.

I looked at my 3 Springfields (2 TRPs and one Trophy Match) and they don't show this. I looked at my 3 Dan Wessons (all 3 are Valkyries) and they all show the about the same as yours (hard to tell from the picture). Not sure what they can do as when the safety is off on the Dan Wessons, it goes as low as it can without an overhang. I would worry a lot more about sand/debris going between the hammer and slide when the hammer is cocked. Lots more room there than the small opening under the thumb safety and the hammer opening is more accessible when the pistol is in the holster.

It's a result of the manufacturer setting up the pistol to have a high grip safety. It's normal and not anything to worry about.

It is going back to S&W at their expense. I own too many 19911’s and none of mine are even close to this size of gap.
