owb holster for 1911

#1

Post by tomneal »

My Safariland Paddle holster has given up the ghost. I really liked it because the holster covered both of the thumb safeties.

I like my crossbreed holster for my Glock 17 BUT...
The 1911 model that just arrived, trips the Mag Release.
I liked the leather between the pistol and my belly.

What's a good OWB Holster for a full sized 1911

Are you opposed to buying another safariland? That would be an easy option since it's known and liked.

Do you want leather or kydex? If Kydex, I'd recommend JW Custom kydex... of all the brands I have ever used, these have the most well thought out designs (being left handed I appreciate that) and the execution attention to detail is fantastic. Although he doesn't do paddles- if you were wanting to stick with a paddle.

For leather, it's more of a what type do you want? Tons of great leathersmiths out there. Here is the OWB thread on the 1911 forum... hope it's ok to cross post.

Was able to get a mold for my STI railed/threaded 2011, turned out great, high attention to detail.

On your six designs owb Kydex is my preferred rig for mine. In fact I’m using it now. No sweat shield but it locks your gun in solid. It’s not coming out and it’s a deliberate draw. Good price. And made in Texas

I carry my 1911 commander in a DeSantis leather thumb break, which has 2 front and 1 rear belt loops. It needed a little bit of work to soften it when I first got it but is nice and smooth now.

I love my RD Warren Gunleather holster.

Here are plenty of endorsements for his work: /viewtopic.php?f=23&t=92090
And my own journey for picking this one is here: /viewtopic.php?f=13&t=91065

I'm sure there are lots of good choices out there. After trying several I found that this holster from El Paso Saddlery is extremely comfortable. When I wear my 1911, this is my go to holster.

Alien Gear looks promising
It has material between the slide and my belly
It does not have a FBI cant option.

Tucker HF1. It even makes plastic guns look good.

I have the Tucker and Byrd, Texas Short Stroke on my radar of my Ranger Officer. I have the SST, but I do not wear it often, due It does not ride as close to my body as other holsters that I have. I saw a Texas Ranger with a Texas Short Stroke one day and it carried well on the body.
