The above link is a bit of a lengthy, albeit interesting, history of ammunition production in the United States, from the American Revolution to the present day.
One nugget I gleaned from this piece is that military forces use FMJ (full metal jacket) rounds because they are more likely to pass through an enemy's body, rather than expanding the wound cavity like a JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point). Wounded soldiers tie up more of an enemy's troops than dead men.
