My fathers Model 999

#1

Post by Odinvalknir »

My dad has a 9rd .22lr revolver that belonged to his father. I've been trying to find out how old this gun is. It could be as old as before the 1900s, or at very least depression era. Anyone have any info on these? It is an H&R Model 999 "Sportsman" 9 round top break .22lr revolver pic link below.

yeah I've been doing some Google searches myself I just have not found any way to narrow down the actual age of the gun. All my father can tell me is it's definitely older than he is LOL.

You should be able to tie down the date of manufacture using this link, 4th post down from top:

Per that post, the gun might have been manufactured before 1937:
Sixth Variation; top of barrel markings moved to right side of barrel---------------1937-1939
The markings are on the left side of the gun in the picture. OTH, you can’t see the top of the barrel in the photo, so maybe there are other markings on the top? Where is the serial # located? If it’s on the right side and there are no markings on the top, then the gun would have been made in 1937 or later.

I had to ask my father to send me another picture of the gun. The serial number is on the bottom of the grip, and according to the serial number it was manufactured in 1966, but there are other things about the gun that do not jive with that. Like the fixed front sight post and a few other things here and there on the gun that a couple websites I've seen claimed were done away with in the 40s. Plus my father telling me that his father had the gun before he was born, my father was born in 1954. So I guess I may not know for sure, oh well it's still a cool little plinking revolver and maybe one day it will end up in my collection.
