While the weapon was falling, the agent tried to catch the firearm and inadvertently pulled the trigger.

Well, at least the story didn't say that the gun, "went off". They acknowledged that the trigger was pulled, albeit by mistake.

On a related note, I assume (since the shoulder bag caught on it) that he was carrying openly. If he was, then his choice of holster retention level should likely be revisited.
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.

I'm surprised that happened too. I would think the feds of all people would have strict retention policies on their sidearm holsters, considering the people they typically have to interact with...

:iagree: This is probably the most important lesson. The same as if you drop a knife.

Let's be glad it was his foot that got shot and not somebody else's foot or worse.

Might could use a bit of baling wire. It would serve two purposes, one to keep the gun in the holster and the other would keep them from being too hasty to draw!! :biggrinjester:

Never try to catch a falling weapon:[/quote]

I started shooting IDPA nine years ago at PSC. During the New Shooter briefing, they said if you drop a weapon, you're DQ'd but if it slips out of your hand to just let it go. They mentioned a match elsewhere where the shooter grabbed for a falling weapon, discharged the firearm, and shot himself in the femoral artery.
The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Clearly, this is a case of insufficient Gun Control. :biggrinjester:
