FL: Father kills son in law accidentally with one shot from .380

Son in law came all the way from Norway to surprise his father in law for his birthday, banged on the door at 11:30 pm and then hid in the bushes. When he jumped out father in law shot him once with a .380 right in the heart.

Guess he didn’t say happy birthday soon enough.

The corollary to "know your target" is "know when, where, how and who you can surprise at night". This is a tragic result of failures in front of, and behind, the gun.

That is indeed a tragedy. And the police said they weren't "second guessing" the man on what he did based on earlier circumstances. However, on the face of the incident, it would seem to violate the 3rd Rule of Firearms Safety: Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It. I'm wondering if the "startle response" got the best of him because the 4th Rule says: Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On The Target. Again, though, tragic incident, for certain.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Son-in-law should have been old enough to be beyond stupid "practical jokes".

Hiding in the bushes at 11:30 pm and jumping out to "surprise" someone...brilliant move.

The idiot snowflakes commenting have never been the victim of a violent crime. Easy to second-guess someone else's actions from your keyboard.

Yep, I'm OK with the SIL getting shot just for being an idiot. ;-)

The very, very few times our doorbell has ever been rung after dark, I've had a cocked and locked handgun at my side when I open the door. No one has ever jumped out of the shrubbery, so I've never had to shoot anyone.

Halloween is excepted, what would you do, huh? Just askin'....

This reminds me: we were in an RV park somewhere down in the hill country a dozen or more years ago and there was a knock on our RV's door, after dark. I, with cocked and loaded Ruger Single Six .22 magnums, opened the door. There was a diminutive Latin American girl, with her mother, who said, "Trick or Treat". I embarrassedly said, we have no treats but gave her a $1 bill.

The moral of this story...is yours for the making. Good Night and Good Luck!

When my daughter was very young late at night I heard a noise at one of the windows just outside of her bedroom. I went out with my .357 only to find one of her girlfriends at her window. Must have been 12 years old or so. Reading this story brings back that point and the potential for a very serious shooting. I will never forget that night and I am sure the little girl had wet panties too.

Read the original article on yahoo.
Read the twelve million comments at the bottom.
Yep...that would be them.

We always answer our door through the Ring. But it is never opened. I have emails from deliveries on long the USPS so if I am not expecting a delivery that day I don’t even open for a delivery man. Just talk through the camera.
