Your thoughts on brass cleaning

How do you clean your brass?
Corn cob media in a Lyman Tumbler. No soaking or anything else. Throw in tumbler and plug in.

What is clean enough? Are you one of those that believes that brass should shine like new?
I do like a little shine, but I am not too anal about it.

Do you clean primer pockets?
No. Not worth the effort.

How often do you change you tumble media?
I change when it starts looking dirty. I guess it lasts about 5 tumbles.

Do you add anything to your media?
Yes. Usually Flitz, but I've had good resulty with non amonia based car polish.

How long do you tumble?
Usually 2-3 hours. Depending on how dirty the media is.

How do you clean your brass?
Corn cob media in a Midway Tumbler.

What is clean enough?
I do like a shine, but some stuff just stays dull.

Do you clean primer pockets?
Absolutely! I use the Lee tool and grind out all of the residue buildup
that will stop a new primer from seating deeply enough. Especially M41
primers in .223REM cases. Or even M34 primers in commercial cases.

How often do you change you tumble media?
When the brass comes out less clean. Some times I toss in bits of
paper towel to collect the dirt as the brass is tumbling. Kind of works.
Paper gets really dirty, must helps some.

Do you add anything to your media?
Yes. Midway brass cleaner that came with the tumber, at least I think it
did.

How long do you tumble?
Usually for about 3 hours, sometimes more, rarely less.

I then separate the brass and tumbling stuff, wipe down the newly
cleaned brass with paper towels, and bag/can/bottle the clean brass
for storage until I need it.

Tom
