I don't know about ruining a barrel, but I've broken a depriming pin or two on a pin wedged sideways in a case.

I got the Frankford magnet mentioned above, and run it through the brass after I tumble the brass through my hands as I'm rinsing it. I feel a little like Scrooge McDuck playing with his money, but it works! ;-)
