Free reloading Class/Coaching

#1

Post by Beiruty »

If one or more CHLers in DFW area are interested in free metallic pistol/rifle reloading course, I am willing to volunteer as instructor/coach.
We will have to work out the details of location, equipment, and students. The only catch is that the students have to be CHLers and members of this forums for at least 1-yr

I would also help in that if the location was not to far.

I'm not going to skew your results by voting, since I live in the Houston area. But if I happened to be near Dallas that say, I would definitely attend. I bought some reloading equipment and supplies, but haven't gotten around to actually learning how to use it yet.

I've reloaded 380, 9mm and .45 but have not ventured into rifle rounds yet. My reloading skill level right now is total noob still.

The reddit reloading section is amazing. I'll point out that trying stuff out with near immediate recourse to a panel of experts is a great way to learn, and experts making themselves available here is a huge resource.

To be productive, the first class size would be limited to 10 students.

The course would have
1) Course hand loading reading material presentation session
2) Actual loading workshop on students/instructor press and case prep tools.
3) The course maybe divided into two: Pistol caliber (straight wall cases) reloading, Rifle Caliber (So, called bottle neck cases).

It would have been nice when I started to be shown and helped. Fortunately I am pretty good at learning by reading but that first round I made had an uneasy " hope this was right" feeling when I pulled the trigger.

I hope you get a full class to pass this on to others and help those who may have been hesitant because they don't know how.

I would definitely be interested, I am a total neophyte, but I really want to learn as much as I can about it, equipment to buy, etc. My work schedule is going to be crazy for the foreseeable future, but, I will do what ever I can to be available.

Thanks, Beiruty!!

You are a good guy, Beiruty! I would have traveled to Dallas to take part in a class back when I started loading. I had to learn it on my own (and with the help of several via email and PM).

Anyone who even thinks they may reload in the future would be well served to get a solid primer on the topic. You'll learn quickly what equipment makes sense for you and just to see the processes in person and how certain things are measured is invaluable! Heck, if I happen to be in Dallas at that time, I'd attend- both to help out and to learn techniques from another handloader.

One thing, a pitfall of self-learning the art of metallic reloading, is that you would end buying any and all kind of tools that accomplish the same thing.
Instead of 1 press, you would have 4. Instead of one way to trim a case you will have 3, and so...
It is fun and lovely, but those tools accumulate and start collecting dust in your reloading area.

If you can allocate the time and attend then there is no harm if there is an extra seat.
