Would you search for a shooter?

#1

Post by tobasco »

This is inspired from the other thread here recently about teachers being armed. But in any situation if you as a chl heard shots nearby and you had no one with you such as family to protect, would you seek out the source of the shots or go the other direction? You would of course be placing yourself in more danger if you did, but if you didn't you might read the news the next day that some crazy person had killed a dozen people and wonder if you could have stopped it.

I would not. Although I want no one person to suffer harm, my choice for owning and soon carrying under concealment is to protect my family, my loved ones and myself. It's unfortunate in this world right now we are surrounded by evil people that all they intend to do is harm others. However if I found myself sorrounded by that threat I would be forced to take action for fear of my life and those I care about around me. Now....do I care about a complete innocent stranger......you bet I do, but I'm not hired to protect and serve the public. I will call 911.

Only if I had a cancerous inoperable brain tumor and was going to die anyway. And the only reason then is because the tumor caused me to loose all common sense.

To paraphrase Will Munny, they should have armed themselves.

Some people run to the sound of gunfire and some run away. The former are not foolhardy and the latter are not cowards. That's just the way people are hardwired. What I would do would depend upon the overall circumstances. Remember, Tex. Penal Code §9.33 allows people to defend 3rd persons.

In line with Charles statement above, you don't know how you are wired until it happens. You may intend to be aggressive or you may not, but you will never know until you find yourself knee-deep in the sewage.

No.

It's impossible to answer this question without context. If it happened at my church, maybe I'd run toward. If it happened at a mall or movie theater, maybe I'd run from.

Under certain circumstances, I might run toward even if I was unarmed.

Hard to say what you'll do until the moment arrives.

Every situation is different. If I am somewhere and kids are dropping like flies I don't think I could hide and watch them die. I think I would try my best to find the shooter while maintaining as much cover as possible.
Now, if I heard shots that were 2 blocks away, probably a different reaction.

OK, yeah, now that's got me thinking. Normally, I'd say no way, but if I was seperated from my family and didn't know where they were, or if I was at our church as you said, that would change my decisions dramatically.

After further review, the answer above is changed to a resounding, "maybe".
