Apparently, the Modern Language Association of America is holding their annual conference in Austin and decided to take the opportunity to protest campus carry.

I wonder if they realize that every single person at, around, inside, outside, etc, the capitol could be legally armed and they don't know it...

Interesting. I used to be a member of the MLA. As a rule, they are extremely educated, literate people, the kind with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The MLA Style Sheet is the formatting standard for many publications and papers around the world. This goes to show that "educated" doesn't equal "intelligent."

I did not see this article but there was another one where the MLA was not impressed with the Spanish translations on the 30.06 and 30.07 signs. They asked their better educated bi-lingual members to let the legislature know that the translations had errors, claiming that the language was required by law.

I do not have an account on the Statesman's site to post comments on the article or I might have point out that they should read the law. It has the English wording but leaves the Spanish translation up to the sign poster.

Just a shame no one at any prior #GunFreeZone School shooting could defensively throw a book at 1,000 feet per second at the aggressor

Isn't scattering slippery paperback books all over a public walkway an OSHA violation? I'm also going to presume that Austin DOES have a littering ordinance?

I have no idea what the "Modern Language Association" is all about, but this about sums it up what I think about their "protest".

Edited to add that I did briefly review their origin, but I find that they have strayed from their original mission.

From Wiki
In later years the association has highlighted issues such as race, gender and class in its professional deliberations. Kimball and Kramer argue that this was part of a "rampant politicization of literary study that the MLA has aggressively supported" in American colleges and universities, including elevating popular culture to a position of parity with great works of literature as subjects for classroom study, and other "radical" postures

If they wish to retain any of their credibility they should stop this nonsense. :tiphat:
