My First Elk

Post by Carry-a-Kimber »

Not a record by any means but this is my first elk so its a trophy for me, nonetheless a nice 5x5. Taken in N.E. New Mexico mid October at about 7am in 20 degree misty weather. He was the most mature bull in a herd of about 30 elk. Shot at 198 yards with a Remington 700 XCR 270 WSM loaded with Barnes 130gr mounted with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x. He made it about 60 yards after being shot, but he was running dead as it was a two lung shot (just missed the heart). Hope to go again this year and get something a little more mature.

This is how we found him.

Never even had the privilege of hunting Elk but I am sure there are a LOT of hunters out there that would be tickled w/ that one for their 3rd or 5th Elk.
I know you are thrilled & congrats. :hurry:

Thanks LT, I was/am very proud of him. He sure looks good on the wall and better yet completely filled my freezer. We had some elk meatloaf just lastnight. ;-)

Never had the chance to hunt an Elk either. I would be happy as a lark with that kill Kimber. Very nice Elk for your first. Taken on public land, or with an outfitter?

It was taken on private land owned by a family member. He has 350 acres and he and his 5 neighbors hunt each others land, totaling a little over 2000 acres. They are completely free range and follow natural migration/breeding routes.
