Mitigate...ok.

I'm not certain how to ask, but have you any clue as to how high a % of mitigation can one expect?

A lot?

A very small amount?

Or can never be known?

Like you my technical experience or I should say (in my case) lack thereof leaves me in the dark.

If, say 'mitigation' is high, well great.

If 'mitigation' is so low, it may not be worth what effort we put into it. How can we be certain that (for instance) 'Disable 3rd party cookies' is really disabled?

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but have very little trust in anything to do within the world of the internet.

Oh, btw, I found out some servers (once you leave them, can be instructed to automatically clear browsing history) but how can we be certain of that?

At this point, 'anything' we do to help us sounds terrific, like all your suggestions, but what's to insure it happen given the internet's notoriety.

Maybe everything we do to make us think this or that action will benefit us when doing so is secretly being laughed at by those pulling the internet levers behind the scenes.

Yeah, I'm skeptical of all things internet pro and con....

Just know everything about you is known and stored.

Brave browser (pc and smartphone apps available)
StartPage for private searches
DuckDuckGo for private searches
AdBlock (for when I have to use Chrome or Edge browsers to access certain websites)
Disable 3rd party cookies
Clear browsing history, cache and cookies often.

Feel free to add to the list and share what you do to mitigate privacy invasion and tracking. Notice I said "mitigate". It is not practical or easy for the normal internet user to remain completely anonymous and leave no tracks.

AndyC,

You posted: Paid VPN service.

By posting that do you mean of the various options to help maintain our privacy 'Paid VPN service' is the best of the lot or ...?

Thanks!

P.S. If so, is there one best VPN service out there and what'd be the monthly cost would you know or guess?

I can recommend PIA (Private Internet Access). Have used it several years. I pay by the year in Bitcoin - about $30. Paying with Bitcoin does not make this totally anonymous. PIA does not keep logs.

Using a VPN does not help at all with services you log in to, obviously.

Would those be considered private proxy servers?

Watching Senate hearing with Facebook CEO Zuckerberg... We can be proud of one of our Sentator's line of questioning here: Ted Cruz nailed him on censorship of conservative content and people and had Zuckerberg backpedaling and admitting: I think it is a fair concern to wonder about bias at Facebook

Not sure if that question was for me, but

I would say PIA is not "private". The word "private" has multiple meanings here.
