A layered defense is the most effective. There is no one answer to preventing an attack in a public school other than shutting them all down. Governor Abbott's plan is a good start, listing several approaches that ISDs can implement quickly.Buin98 said "... Comprehensive planning is the solution. Not a few cherry picked solutions.

The Stanford prison experiment shows all to well the effects of turning schools into prisons:
Children need God and morality and responsibility and understanding that their actions have consequences.Guns haven’t changed. People have changed. Behavior that is accepted from today’s young people was not accepted yesteryear.
The Stanford prison experiment shows all to well the effects of turning schools into prisons:
In the Milgram and the Zimbardo studies, participants conform to social pressures. Conformity is strengthened by allowing some participants to feel more or less powerful than others. In both experiments, behavior is altered to match the group stereotype...with no control, prisoners learned they had little effect on what happened to them, ultimately causing them to stop responding, and give up. Quick to realize that the guards were the highest in the hierarchy, prisoners began to accept their roles as less important human beings.

Very similar to the point I made in my previous post about addressing the root of the problems. A David Hogg fan club member I am not.Charles L. Cotton wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 12:35 pmAbsolutely right!Paladin wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 12:34 pm Past Versus Present Americans

Re: Clear backpacks
In my opinion, the bolded comments above are concerning to me as I believe they indicate part of the problem. While I wouldn't have hit the panic alarm immediately, I would have at least asked for more specific information from the first student to determine if his report was credible rather than telling him to go sit down. This is especially true after the second one said something. An inquiry seeking more specific info would have been appropriate and it should not have taken four students reporting the knife before some action to investigate further took place.Bruin98 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 11:22 pm Fourth period rolled around one day and the kids were taking a test. A student approached me and said so and so has a knife. I told him to go sit down. A few minutes later another kid from the same area came up and said so and so has a knife. So and so not being a typical trouble maker, I told him to go sit down. A few minutes later another kid from the same area came up and said so and so has a knife.
I said fine give me the backpack. I searched it. Found nothing.
A few minutes later another kid came up and said, "it's in his pen."
Huh?"
"Take his pen."
So I took his pen. An off brand CROSS style pen.
"There's no knife here."
"Unscrew it."
Sure enough--there was a 2-3 inch blade where the ink cartridge was supposed to be.
Clear backpack. Metal detector. Knife still found its way into my classroom.
Whether the presence of the knife represented a significant threat is a whole other discussion as I pretty much always had a pocket knife with me when I was in school.

Re: Clear backpacks
I'm going to propose for schools, the same solution I proposed after 9-11, which everybody ignored. I'm sure they'll all ignore it this time too. Well, actually, I proposed two solutions, both of which were ignored.
- Solution 1: in 2001, my suggestion was 'fly naked'. Literally. Absolutely no clothing. Absolutely NO carry-ons, not even a do-rag. Everything is in your checked baggage. No boxcutters, no shoebombs, cuz you're ALL nekkid. Today, you can go to school the same way. 'learn naked'. No backpacks or clothes to hide weapons in. Nobody feeling inferior because they aren't wearing/can't afford the latest Air Jordan shoe. Everybody's barefoot and bare other stuff......
- Solution 2: in 2001, my other suggestion was "give EVERY passenger a gun when they board". Only way the plane is going to get hijacked then is by unanimous vote. Today, offer EVERY kid a gun as he comes into the building. That way, the average kid will be on a par with the school shooters, assorted headcases, and the gang kids. It's wonderfully socialist, so the libs should go for it. Equality of condition (and they're all 'Condition 1').
