A large Spanish-language radio station in Mexico will soon begin broadcasting in Chinese in a deal critics say will bring Beijing propaganda to Chinese Americans throughout Southern California.

A Federal Communications Commission filing on the sale of radio station XEWW AM 690 radio near Tijuana reveals the buyer has ties to Phoenix Satellite Television US, a subsidiary of Hong Kong's pro-Beijing Phoenix TV.

According to government sources, signs that Phoenix is involved in the purchase of the radio station prompted the Trump administration last week to begin an investigation into the national security implications of the sale.

Phoenix TV has been identified by U.S. intelligence agencies as a major overseas outlet used to spread propaganda and promote the policies of the communist government in Beijing. The Hong Kong television station also has close ties to China's intelligence service and military

On a tangentially related piece of radio history from south of the Texas border, does anyone remember the ZZ Top song
"I heard it on the X"?

What this song refers to is the Mexican radio stations (first prefix = X) in the 1950's which were unfettered by a
Mexican FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and could power their station with much higher wattage than US stations.
They could broadcast strongly into Texas and other states.

The appeal of the Mexican stations to US listeners was that they would play "race music" (black artists) which the white-controlled
stations in the US refused to play. US teenagers who wanted to hear the latest black artists "heard it on the X."

One or more of these stations was across the border from Del Rio, Texas.

Another type of programming that "the X" offered was an outrageous radio preacher that would send you pieces of Jesus' cross,
or somesuch, in exchange for financial donations. Lots of scammin' going on.

Yep, reminded me both of the vintage ZZ Topp, and also of 'Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" :tiphat:

This has been an ongoing concern for some time. The following was from March, but since it was from CNN, it was probably dismissed as fake news by some. This will obviously apply to all forms of media and needs to be taken into consideration not just from the Chinese, but other countries as well when formulating national policy.

XERF -Del Rio, Texas. The transmitter was across the border in Mexico if I remember correctly. We used to listen to the Wolf around campfires in Montana and Idaho in the evenings. That station came in strong all the way up there due to the wattage they cranked out!!

Sort of like Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and Radio Liberty, as well as the BBC world service, and RT (Russia Today), for that matter. I used to enjoy VOA in Europe - they played good music.
