Alf,

Thank you for the information on the winter solstice. It was informative.

However, that is not the reason for the season in my opinion.

I think Alf is talking about the season called winter.

I fully understand the astronomical aspect, and even the celebration of the solstice from a couple of different philosophies.
However "The reason for the Season" has a completely different meaning to me that is not based on the movement of the planets in the solar system.

As I stated: "...in my opinion."

Yours may differ but I'll still buy you a cup of coffee.

Max,

Some people still think the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer than the winter but if that was true, it would be winter for the whole world at the same time. Not so. Here in the USA, winter starts today, and in Australia summer starts on the same day. That's because the Earth's axis is tilted like the link explains.

"And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime" to the continuing confusion of pop stars who don't understand the reason why the winter season starts today in the USA.

:iagree:

The "Reason for the Season" is normally reserved for the fact that the Christmas season is a celebration of Christ's birth. This thread could have been titled differently. That being said, Merry Christmas to all of the forum members.
Do what you say you're gonna do.

Alf,

Really? An astronomy lesson? If you know who Alf was then we both learned this many, many years ago.

I have a friend who always said that the reason for the season was the tax collector. Of course, she had been the elected tax assessor collector for her county which gave her a slightly different take on why Joseph and Mary were traveling.

But I wish all of you who celebrate it, a very merry Christmas.
