Lifetime CHL in Tennessee

#1

Post by WildBill »

This story is from May 2015, but it is the first time I became aware.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — The Governor of Tennessee, Bill Haslam, signed legislation this week that allows residents of Tennessee
to receive a permit to carry a firearm that does not expire.
The House passed the measure 90-3, and the Senate approved it 30-2. Before this legislation, permits expired every 4 years.
Because of the new legislation, residents 21 years old and older can get a lifetime permit for $500.
A background check will be done every 5 years. The state Safety Department can revoke or suspend a permit at anytime
they feel the permit holder no longer meets the requirements.

I like the idea of a lifetime permit, but $500 seems a little steep about half of that would be more in line but why the need for higher prices for something that would require no additional administrative costs?

I just looked up the fees and $500 doesn't seem like much of a bargain.

Handgun Carry Permit Fees by Years Issued

Number of Years Original Cost Renewal Cost
3 $102.50 $37.50
4 $115.00 $50.00
5 $127.50 $62.50
6 $140.00 $75.00
7 $152.50 $87.50
Lifetime $500.00 N/A

I would be completely fine with the $500 knowing I never have to worry about it again. Yes it might be a bit more but every 5 years you have to deal with renewal and its just one more thing in life.

$500 and set for life is cool with me.

A Texas veteran would have to keep an active license for 100 years just to break even.

If it guaranteed I would live that long, it would be worth it.

Louisiana has a lifetime license too, and IIRC it's $500 as well.

Not bad deal if you are getting LTC at 21. By my calculations, that would be 11 renewals to be licensed until 75. Initial $ 140.00 and 11 renewals @ $ 70/ea. totals over $ 900.
