Years ago when I drove OTR I'd pass through Gallup and go north towards Shiprock. With all due respect to folks living there, that place used to be one of the sketchiest. Why would they not want law abiding citizens carrying in their WM there? Mental illness?

Right where? Was there supposed to be a picture or link?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

That was my thought. I just stay on I-40 and drive on through.......get my gas elsewhere.

According to Wikipedia (grain of salt) Gallup is near tribal land but not described as being a part of tribal land. Good thought.. Would explain the off limits if not the logic.

Thanks!

Gallup is know as the most dangerous city in NM. I wouldn't be surprised if it is on tribal land.

The Walmart was pretty busy at 11PM local. Folks didn't look especially sketchy, (lots of young-ish Native Americans, many with kids in tow) but I didn't need that chap stick badly enough to disarm in the parking lot to go get it. The gas station had one the next morning.

The scariest part of this trip was landing in Bakersfield, not finding my bag, and when I asked the TSA agent to point me to the baggage office he said (loudly) "Did you check a firearm?" Nearly messed my pants being outed in California in the first 5 minutes. (I was 100% California compliant, but still unnerving)

From Wikipedia
Gallup is known as the "Heart of Indian Country" because it is in the middle of the Navajo reservation and home to many tribes.

Gallup, New Mexico, violent crime, on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 100, is 96. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder
and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The US average is 41.4.

Gallup, New Mexico, property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 100, is 83. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary,
larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but
there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The US average is 43.5.

CRIME Gallup, NM United States
Violent Crime 96.3 41.4
Property Crime 83 43.5

Don't you think it might be nice to tell us what the sign said? Or, is this a test? Or, are we supposed to just guess? :confused5

It said "No Firearms Allowed on these Premises"...
Such signs have the force of law in NM.

Never meant to make you guess... just wasn't relevant, since ANY "No Guns" sign has force of law in NM.

Didn't want to take a photo just then... would have drawn too much attention.

This is kind of unusual, since Walmart has a policy of not posting their stores, but perhaps because it's in Indian Country (am I allowed to say that or is it a microagression?)

It has close proximity to Native American reservations,
Looking at a Google map and at the Federal Lands map... I don't believe the land the WalMart is on is tribal... Possible, but believe not.

If I would have know those crime stats when we were deciding where to stop, I likely would have kept driving.
I certainly would not have gone to WalMart at 11:PM...
