Del Mar College assistant geology professor Vernon Kramer said he had a situation in one of his night classes about four years ago in which he was thankful to have an armed city police officer for a student.

A female student received a text from an ex-boyfriend threatening to come in the building with a gun if she didn't come outside, Kramer recalled.

The officer, who sat next to the woman, went out and approached the man. Kramer never found out exactly what happened, he said, but saw other officers arrive to handle the situation.

Kramer said the proposed measure could help others in similar situations.
