Campus security fails to protect students
Obvious Solution would be to disarm all Campus Police.McALLEN — It was a little before 7 p.m. when two masked gunmen, armed with automatic rifles, burst into a classroom at South Texas College demanding money during a quiet evening of student registration.
The year was 1998, when the school went by South Texas Community College, and the attempted robbery on Jan. 13 quickly turned bloody when a security guard, visibly armed, stood up and tried to control the situation.
“I am absolutely convinced that if we did not have that armed individual, nothing would have happened,” said STC President Shirley Reed. “We may have lost some cash, but no one would have been hurt.
“When the armed security guard stood up, it was obvious he was armed,” Reed recalled. “The young men then sprayed the crowd with bullets, killed the security guard and wounded several more.”
