Earth Day Demonstrations?

#1

Post by dale blanker »

How things have changed. I think this day used to be just a celebration of nature, maybe with hike in the woods, a picnic, an outdoor concert, or something fun. Now we have to have demonstrations about everything including something as innocouous as Earth Day. What's going on?

According to Neil deGrasse Tyson there seems to be a decline in the interest or trust in Science and this trend could undermine our democracy: http://www.livescience.com/58758-neil-t ... cracy.html

I think ignorance of basic economics has a much bigger head start in the USA and is more of a threat historically.

Not in my opinion. The purpose of scientific research is to "question everything," not just to fall in line with current thought. I'd bet Tyson would love to see money pour in to reinforce the scientific evidence of man made climate change, but would not want to see one penny go to research to prove otherwise. Science is questioning, not reinforcing current thought. There's little to no research grants available to disprove human impact on climate, but loooooads of cash for those that want to "prove it." Academics and scientists live or die by research grants. Just follow the money. When equal voice is "allowed" by the left for opposing views, then, and only then will the public as a whole have faith in scientific research that it deserves. As long as opposing views are labeled those only of "deniers," a segment of the public will always have distrust in science.

Really? Why would he have any interest making any particular point about climate change? His whole life has been devoted to science, not business, but I have to admit he has become a pretty good entertainer... I took my grandson to his sold-out presentation in Austiin last year and really enjoyed it. We've also subscribed to some of his Great Courses about the universe. He seems genuinely interested in promoting science in an unbiased manner.

Come on... He's a known man made climate change alarmist and leftist, like most celebrity scientists. Anthropomorphic Global Warming is the real junk science. Politicians love to embrace it because the solution is always more, larger, and more centralized government; wealth transfer; and an enforced decline in living standards for "everybody else".

If the model predicts warming and we get cooling, they say it's caused by fossil fuel use. If we get warming, it's caused by fossil fuel use. If the weather stays the same or gets better, it's fossil fuel use. Meanwhile the proposals for reducing fossil fuel use are guaranteed to cause more death, poverty, starvation, and unrest, especially in the developing world.

Yep, Tyson is a very well known, my grandson's hero, and highly repected but he could be wrong along with many. many other scientists. What is your source that disproves him? And why are the proposals for reducing fossil fuel use guaranteed to cause more death, poverty, starvation, and unrest?

In my area it appeared to be an anti-Trump demonstration.

I always make special arrangements to celebrate Earth Day. I started and let 3 vehicles run for 7 consecutive hours also replaced my led lighting with regular bulbs (yes I still have some) all lights in house will be turned on for 24 hours except for bedroom lights when sleeping. I also test my generators on this day with an eight hour run. I used to vent Freon but it got too pricey. (gotta draw the line some where) Finished this delightful celebration by smoking meat in a wood burning smoker which was preheated for five hours.
Happy Earth Day :anamatedbanana :clapping: :cheers2: : :biggrinjester:

E.D. has morphed into leftist day.

E.D. is a leftist day for cretins who bloviate about fossil fuels (though you won't catch any of these unwashed riding a bike to any earth day celebration, but pile into cars to get there, ah, rather like normal people...) or fly Russia's, China's, Cuba's, Venezuela's flag and lecture us about how great it it to live in those countries and hero worship dictators like Castro or the now dead, Chavez.

Earth day, pppppfffffttt!

I think someone figured Earth Day didn't go the way they wanted it to, toward political purposes, so they figured they needed a science day to piggyback the agenda. I'm a big fan of science but always recognize that no matter what data is collected, humans with their biases interpret the data. I agree that celebrating the earth is a great idea and reason to get outside and just enjoy it. The weather this week in Houston is fantastic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Einhorn

You will notice some of the women protestors on Earth day were wearing Unicorn horns. Ira Einhorn called himself the Unicorn as apparently that is the translation of Einhorn. Depending on who is writing the article he had nothing or a lot to do with the founding of Earth Day. Most agree he was on the stage for the first Earth Day celebration.

If you remember he fled to France after his girlfriend was found in a trunk in his closet. France being France, liked him cause he was all cool radical, and so they wouldn't let the US extradite him until 23 years later. He's currently serving a life sentence.

I'm heading out for a long bike ride.

The weather IS beautiful, upon my return I'm gonna wash my V-8 engine gas guzzling truck to celebrate fossil fuel day!

You miss my point completely. True science is questioning, not going along with the crowd. If a scientist questions the science of matter vs. anti-matter, the expansion or contraction of the universe, they may be outside the mainstream. But, if a scientist questions man's contribution to climate change, they are labeled a "science denier," and there is even talk of making that a criminal offense. The earth has been through countless dramatic changes, resurfacing, mass extinctions, etc. in 4.5 billion years with absolutely no cause by mankind, because we weren't here. Yet all of a sudden any change in climate is man caused, and only mankind can stop it. Regardless of who is right or wrong, the left has made it a mark of "delusion, insanity, or crime" to even question it. When scientists stop questioning, there is no progress. Perhaps the left would like to see us return to the days of Galileo, when thought outside the mainstream got you locked up.

What is his source that proves AGW? It's been 20 years since the AGW hoax began in earnest and nothing the models predicted has happened. So the scientists change the name (climate change), fake the data (temperature data), and propose the same solutions that didn't do anything. Reduce fossil fuel use (except if you use nuclear or hydro). Massively transfer wealth from 1st world (free enterprise based) to 3rd world (failed socialist states). All of which have no effect on the temperature, but have significant negative economic consequences (which is why they always require government coercion).

The Earth's atmosphere is warming since the beginning of human civilization... Maybe, maybe not.

The increase is caused by mining and use of fossil fuels increasing the (minuscule) percentage of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere...Doubtful, no clear evidence.

The temperature increase (that might not be happening) is resulting in disruptive effects on human civilization...Absolutely no evidence.

The only way to solve this problem (that may not exist) is by coercing large numbers of people to substantially reduce their use of fossil fuels, as long as the replacement is not nuclear, and to transfer massive amounts of wealth to socialist despot governments.

I have a degree in Physics, but I am not an atmospheric scientist or geologist. Neither is Tyson (I think hes a theoretical physicist). Neither are the vast majority of "scientists". I do have enough knowledge of the scientific method to doubt the results of the so called AGW "consensus". Additionally I have enough understanding of macroeconomics to realize that even if the AGW hypothesis were true, the proposed solutions are useless and massively harmful.

I agree . When looking at study/ research results one must also interpret them through the lenses of what bias the researchers have and who is funding the research
