Late Christmas present

Post by stoneface »

Just got back from the gun show here in FW with a late present to myself. My wife and I pooled the money we got from christmas with the determination to buy a new gun. She really wanted a Sig (and so did I) but we couldn't find one that we could settle on that was in our (limited) price range. However, we did come home with a nice Rock Island Armory 1911 :woohoo . This is my first 1911 and first .45 and I can't wait to try it out.

I do have a question, though, for all of you 1911 gurus. What would be a good ammo to start out with for target shooting? Keep in mind this will be my introduction to this gun.

Thanks guys.

Winchester white box 230 grain FMJ,or the Monarch stuff seems to be most reasonably priced.I've never had problem with RIA 1911's feeding any ammo i shove in them ,even cast lead reloads

Thanks guys. I just went through the disassembly and reassembly. It's definitely more complicated than my other semiautos but I worked it out. Now to the cleaning!

Go to Wally World. They have a 100 round boxes of 230 grain ball ammo for $28.

I'd go with Blazer ammo at Wally World for around $9.50 a box of 50. Found the Monarch ammo shoots pretty dirty.

Just got back from Wally World and they were completely cleaned out of all .45 ammo (figures--the one time someone was actually working the sporting goods counter). I guess I wasn't the only one who brought home a new friend this weekend.

Yeah especially since you are in Tarrant county all of the Wally Worlds have the Blazer Brass for dirt cheap. Hard to beat the price with any other range ammo.

Sweet lookin' gun! :fire

I'd say any decent brand of ball ammo would make a good start.

I read an article in a gun mag a month or so back about these guns. They author was very impressed and the write up was as good as what you'd expect from a $1,000+ gun. I saw them at the gun show last weekend in the $375 range.

Based on that write up, you couldn't have done better for the money for a 1911. The only thing close to that (not a 1911) would be a M&P .45 for $370 after rebate with 4 mags. They are great too!

I must say that the all-black model pictured above is quite nice; although I have plenty of guns I think I would drop four bills on one of those blackies at the next show if I saw one!

My Wally World in Mansfield always has a good supply of .45 230 gr CCI Blazer Brass for 11.97 a box (50).
