From a third party's position that mat could be an interesting legal point.
The lawyer against the homeowner could point toward the mat as evidence of the "bloodthirsty" nature of the resident.
The lawyer for the resident could point to the sign as a CLEAR warning that the deceased home invader chose to ignore and therefore had already accepted the risk.
Were I on the jury I'd make sure that the resident was held blameless and petition the judge for five minutes alone with the lawyer attempting to stick it to the homeowner.
