Shooting Underwater

I understand that Glock's can be shot underwater with no harm to the pistol and no modification required. Presumably this applies to all calibers...

Conversely, I've also been advised modification is necessary if shooting underwater is to be done.

(and no, I've no plans to shoot underwater, I'm simply curious...)

Anyone know the answer?

Which brings to mind: How far would such shooting be accurately effective? If accuracy can be achieved at all.

my guess would be, depending on caliber and load, 6 to 18 inches. Somewhere, if I can find it, there was a discussion about a guy that used his plastic sided above ground pool for ballistics checks by shooting through the plastic wall and measuring the distance from the side wall to the lead on the bottom of the pool. Not much distance. Also, check the "milk jug tests" for comparison.

I think mythbusters did a show on this. The .357 mag was the only round to substantially penetrate a gel block. Long guns didn't work because there was too much water to push out the barrel. The barrel split.
I'll seach more.

Read the Glock page, it makes it clear they are talking about using only certain rounds. Using standard high-pressure rounds could damage the gun and injure or kill the user.

And you're supposed to change something in the gun to allow water to flow past it when you pull the trigger, I'm not too sure what it is though. I wouldn't shoot underwater more than once or twice for cool effects though. If you need your gun underwater than you're better off with a knife

I believe you have to change the firing pin "cup" to one with holes also barrel must be full of water submerged,if you are underwater with gun hearing and eye protection to prevent rupturing eardrums damaging eyes must be worn,2 bad accidents I read about happened,one guy shot a glock 17 underwater and ruptured his eardrums,another guy told his friends in a boat hey watch this stuck the barrel in the water and pulled the trigger which blew his gun up since he basically just plugged the barrel creating an over pressure situation

aside from the barrel pressure issue, I had no idea that there would be that much energy left at 10 feet under water.
