Post by kalipsocs »

Okay lets open the ammo can...of worms! See what I did there? ;-) So what do you Mosin or SVD shooters think is the best shooting mil surp? Okay go.

I just got 450 rounds of this stuff:

It looks great. I haven't shot it yet, but the fact that it was brass cased and non-corrosive made it worth the extra to me.

to quote 7.62x54r.net
You dig your ammo out of a farmer's field in Ukraine and it works just fine.
My little brother picked up a big tin sealed box that weighed close to 40 lbs and looks like it is at least 30-40 years old and the stuff fired flawlessly. Just make sure you clean your gun well afterward most Mosin mil surplus ammo is at least somewhat corrosive.
Personally, I’m interested in keeping other people from building Utopia, because the more you believe you can create heaven on earth the more likely you are to set up guillotines in the public square to hasten the process.--James Lileks

There are several varieties that work well. The Czech yellow silver tip stuff is steel core, heavy ball (~180grn) ammo. The stuff I had was made sometime in the 70s. It shoots well, and is fairly accurate as far as milsurp goes. Comes in 440-round spam cans, wrapped in 20-rounds packs with wax paper and tied with waxed twine.

I also have some Hungarian silver tip steel core light ball (147gr) that I liked even better. Unfortunately, it's nearly gone, and I don't have an immediate source for more. It comes in cases of 800 in a nice wood crate, with a soldered metal interior that peels away like an old pull-tab soda can. I had 2 cases of this stuff, and use the crates for storing all sorts of ammo.

I've shot various other types of milsurp ammo, but have had great results with the two above. I would advise you to stay away from East German ammo. I bought a box of it once, and ended up with THREE dud primers. That's a 15% failure rate.
