Couple Questions about CHL
Hey guys/gals. Just got back an hour or so ago from Tom and Tami's CHL class and had a few questions.
1. It asks for a Permanent and Mailing address on your application. Is the mailing address just for where they send the license? Or is that their mailing address for all future whatevers? If so, I take it it costs the $25 to change it if that changes?
2. How does the license arrive? Is it in a marked envelope that says something like "CHL blah blah blah" or is it in a more plain envelope that says something like "Texas Department of Public Safety" with no inclination that a CHL license is inside? (I ask this because my parents are not advocates of guns. Their home is my permanent address and honestly would rather save them from emotional duress of worrying about a CHL and me carrying. I am doing this for myself after a friend had a close scare where she was mugged and because future jobs in my college degree path may have me in shady areas of downtown at any hour of the day.)
3. How long do you estimate it to take to receive your license? I heard somewhere around 60 days? Is that about dead on? I know there's a huge rush of people getting their CHL's and that that is slowing things down...If anyone has any say on this that would be great.
Thanks yall.
Btw, Tom and Tami were excellent! What a great way to take a CHL class!

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Welcome to the forum and the Tom & Tami Estep Alumni Club.
1. Correct on all counts.
You might have problems if it's not the same as the address on your driver license. I've never been able to get a final opinion on that.
2. Someone who has received a CHL recently can provide the current information. It used to be a pretty nondescript envelope similar to the one that you receive when you have to renew your driver license.
3. More like 90 days at present.

Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.
Re: Couple Questions about CHL
The address on my Driver's License would be the permanent address that would appear on my CHL. Its just my mailing address that differs since I'm at school and all. I suppose I'll have it turned in and mailed to my Permanent address.
I would like to hear from someone who got theirs recently as to #2.
Thanks!
P.S.
Also forgot to ask. I have held numerous part-time jobs within the past 5 years, more than allowed to fill in on the Yellow Application form. It says "(Attach Additional sheets as necessary)" at the bottom of that form...Does that mean I need a photocopy of that format to fill out the additional work locations on? Or can I just type them up in a similar format in Word and print it out and attach it to the form? Or is it really that important to tell them about some job I worked when I was a teenager fresh out of Highschool when I was home from College for a winter break or something like that?

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Well as a fellow college student living away from my permanent address I can tell you from my experience that you will have to change your Driver's License. Don't expect your permanent address to show up on your CHL. When I filled out my paperwork I put my parent's house as the permanent and my apartment at school as my mailing address. Well when I get my CHL it has my school address so I call and they say that is the way it has to be since that is where I am currently residing. So instead of paying the fee to change the CHL address it was cheaper just to change my DL. Hope that helps you!Rawb77 wrote:The address on my Driver's License would be the permanent address that would appear on my CHL. Its just my mailing address that differs since I'm at school and all. Thanks!
Also, in regards to the envelope it comes in......... mine was a plain white envelope with the return address if i can remember correctly as:
Regulatory Licensing Service
Texas Department of Public Safety
Blah blah blah
Thats it!
Good luck on your wait! Be patient!

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm graduating in may or else I would have put my school address as my permanent address. My home address will suffice since I'm still job hunting and even picking up a new job and moving into an apartment isnt considered "permanent for me" since theres the chance they could move you or let you go if they change their minds or something like that. IMO, my permanent Address is my parents address until I get married or it becomes time to renew my CHL. Believe me, if the authorities asked where I was and went to my parents house...they'd tell them where I was and if they could spank my rear before they do. Hahaha.
Anyone Know the answer to my "P.S." in my previous post about the required Employer's addresses?

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
I would assume that you could do either option you ask about but if it was me I would call on Monday and find out for sure what they say. Its better to give them the info now then have them find it later on their own somehow and delay your application.Rawb77 wrote: P.S.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
The authorities won't come looking for you. Irregularities in addresses or anything else just result in letters and delays.
There's no standard for information that won't fit on the form. You could write it on notebook paper, print it from a PC, or whatever.
All DPS really cares about are the counties where you lived or worked, since those are the places where you are most likely to get in trouble with the law.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Ok so I really dont care about telling them about those seasonal jobs I had when I was like 19 and 20 haha. I put down the most recent which date back to 2005. The past 4 years should suffice them. lol.
Thanks again for yalls help. I dont think I have any other questions! I'll be poking in and around from time to time so hope to get to know you over time.
Btw, anyone up for going to the Shooting range in in Texas City sometime this week. (the one where Tom and Tami go for their shooting requirements?) I'm fairly new to firearms and just recently purchased my first, a S&W 642 snubbie. I'd love to meet some people and maybe learn a thing or two!

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
I can't make it to Texas City in the foreseeable future, but quite a few forum members shoot there.
Lester, who is usually the range officer, is helpful when he is not busy riding herd on other shooters.
Revolvers are "the bomb," or whatever you kids say these days. Just line up the sights and keep them in line while you squeeze the trigger. Bang. Repeat.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Yeah, I fired 35 rounds through her this afternoon. She kicks like a preggo cow. The kinda kick that will hurt your hand if youre not expecting it or holding the gun wrong, but otherwise seems...satisfactory...especially when you dont dislocate your strong arm thumb haha.
I have some +P rounds for her...I wonder how those will feel HAHA!
But yes...revolvers are "the bomb" Tom told us today about a guy who was killed when he kept trying to fire the gun but had the saftey on. Something about revolvers is nice because they are easy: load...point...pull...boom! None of this magazine deal with safteys and slidelocks and cocking and decocking...blargh!
My friend tells me that my 642 needs to eat more because it only weighs 15 ounces. He says its anorexia... Then he says it's more bulimic because she pukes up bullets. So then he says its Bulexic! Which inturned...has made me name her "Lexi"
*sigh...* Does anyone else name their guns? I figured I'd do it since it was a first.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
There is a sweet spot where recoil is absorbed properly and doesn't hurt. You can shoot a .44 Magnum with no trouble when you find it. You also build up some muscular toughness in a short time.Rawb77 wrote:Yeah, I fired 35 rounds through her this afternoon. She kicks like a preggo cow. Many people name their guns, cars, etc. I don't. It's a personal preference.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Yeah I actually discovered that out a bit today. I fired off 35 rounds. (5 rounds 7 times) and the first Time i shot i held the gun normally, felt great.
The second and third time I fired it, I held it a little higher up on the grip to lessen the recoil and to keep the barrel from pointing too far upwards after shooting a round. It works...but it caused a good vibration to rip down my wrist/thumb area. Hurt a little.
Switched back to the normal grip...no problems, just like the first 5 rounds I shot.
I definitely tell where you're coming from about the sweet spots! I'll get used to her more once I dump a couple hundred rounds through her I bet. Today she was still on diapers.
Thanks again Seamus!

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Welcome aboard.
Looks to me like you are off to a pretty good start. Tom and Tammi are among he the best. There are almost as many opinions about what gun to carry as there are guns or gun toters. One thin g that is prety clear though is its a good idea to learn yor gun and learn it well. Looks like you are well on your way down on that path.

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
Thanks! I would hope I'm going down the right path. It is the first firearm ive ever bought or owned and I spent a couple weeks reading about it and other models and other makers who have similar type guns and read all the ins and out about them.
I found a nice holster on Don Hume last night that I ordered for it, it was the H715 model that clips to your belt and hangs inside your pants at the hip. Tom had one at class yesterday and I liked how it functioned. I forsee myself trying out several holsters down the road over the next several years along with different pistols as well...but hey...thats part of owning firearms eh?

Re: Couple Questions about CHL
If you're worried about postal employees knowing what the contents of an envelope, you're fears are well founded. I served 18 months on a Federal Grand Jury three or four years ago and the postal service has more "inside job" thefts that anyone would believe. Postal employees can detect a gift card or cash in a greeting card and anything with any kind of license (driver's, CHL or others). Fortunately, while most of the crime is internal, the percentage of employees unable to resist the temptation is very small. That being said, at least 25% of the charges we considered involved postal employee theft. They've got a lot of employees.
