AMMO

Post by Rifleman55 »

I bought a new xd9 at acadamy today. Of course they didn't have any ammo, when I got to wal-mart they were out. I went to my favorite gun shop and they had several boxes of Monarch, that is Acadamy's store brand. Any guesses where they got it. :mad5

Apparently somebody cornered the market and they're selling at huge markups at gun shows.

What we're seeing is capitalism at its finest; i.e., "Buy low, sell high". Is this a great country or what? :patriot:

Fret not, this too shall pass, and remember, "What goes around, comes around".

What goes around comes around is correct.

Historically, those who have taken advantage of customers suffer in the long run. They make some gains in the short term, but that does not last. People have memories.

Supply and Demand. Everyone is/was in panic mode and buying at almost any price. Enter the people who want to make a buck out of the panic. They are wiping the shelves clean and turning around and sellin at gun shows and online like gunbroker.com. These "resellers" are probably buying way beyond thier means in some cases but making a killing from the panicked. This bubble will burst.
Soon, the panic buying will turn into "this is stupid" and buy only what they will shoot in the near future. This will stabilize the price. The resellers who may have way too much, now will have thier own PANIC!!. The gun show prices will come down and on gunbroker.com you will sellers putting up for bid 5 boxes at X price instead of 1. After that the hoarders or fully stocked individuals will refuse to buy until the prices comes down. Many others have started to reload ammo for the first time. (causing panic buying there as well) but decreasing the need for factory ammo.
Then you will start seeing more ammo on the shelves and not as many "out of stock-no backorder" captions on online ammo listings. This will cause further "reverse panic". In time ammo should return to price it was (depending on raw material prices).

I am an optimistic guy, Am I dreaming here?

Oh yeah, this thread (EDIT:and other simular threads) mentions primary sellers who are jacking the price way up. When this thing settles out, I will remember the Wally World's, Academys, and Cabela's standing by their normal pricing structure.

I went to the Gun Show at the Live Oak Civic Center (suburb of San Antonio) on Saturday. 12th in line. Got in to the first vendor with ammo out... my head almost exploded.

Monarch Red Box like in my picture (Academy Price $13.99) Live Oak Civic Center Gun Show Price - $30 per box of 50.
.38 Special - $40 per box of 50.
9mm - $45 per box of 50.
And my favorite - .45 ACP - $50 per box of 50 or $1 each bullet.

I didn't buy any ammo but I am ready for the insanity to STOP!

Seriously, I have stopped going to Gun (stick it to you) Shows anymore...

I am also making notes of smaller gun shops whom I have trusted in the past - now trying to take advantage. I will remember who was loyal and who was NOT!

At the gun show a couple of weeks ago several sellers had Monarch blue box 7.62x39 for $12/box of 20. Academy had them on the shelf (and still do) for $6/box. Who in their right mind would buy ammo at the gun show (at these prices and availability)? I saw one box of .308s that was in the ballpark of being appropriately priced. Everything else was high as a cat's back. What are these sellers thinking? Oh well, I guess there is a sucker out there and the sellers are waiting for them.

I did pick up a couple of five round mags that magically gained the ability to hold five more rounds. :hurry: At $10 each I didn't think they were outragous given the fact that I can't find them anywhere for less.

I work on a semi Air Force Base. Brooks City-Base. These are Researchers, Scientists, PhD types; and a BUNCH of Lt's (I get a new one about every 18 months so far (retired in 2005 - was NCOIC for 3 years prior to that). These folks are just NOW figuring out that there is an ammo problem. A Doc (Retired Lt. Col) at the lab heard me and one of the Jr. Scientist (ex-AF Nuke Tech) talking about going to the range at lunch and said that they wanted to go. He has a .38. I told him to tell me when he found the ammo and we would go. That was 3 weeks ago! For a democrat, he saw our point of view pretty fast.

I saw him at the Live Oak GunShow and I think we are set for the range the week after Memorial Day. THOSE are the people I saw BUYING ammo at the gunshow. "Once in a while shooters." That means it has gotten to the bottom of the well and HAS TO GET BETTER FROM HERE. - They just busted the 30,000 bullet guy.... gotta get easier to find ammo now.

Isn't it about time for someone to weigh in and tell us how we should support our local small gun shop, rather than buy things from the big box retailers?

I will!

But commodities don't count. I've never felt compunction to buy ammo from my neighborhood firearms dealer. That's like implying you always gotta buy nails from the same hardware store where you bought your nail gun.

I'm a pretty loyal customer. I've given my local dealer the nod for guns over all others a couple dozen times during the past few years. If he didn't have what I wanted in stock, there ya go: I looked elsewhere. In a few instances he was the receiving FFL on those transfers, so he still got a piece of the action.

He was seldom the cheapest, but my local firearms dealer was never so much more expensive that I felt he should be penalized because I might possibly save $40 or $50 elsewhere.

I view gun owners and gun dealers as inexorably linked. If the local gun dealers go away, whether from price pressure or legislative exclusion, where does that leave us as gun owners?

Heck, I tip 10 bucks for a haircut. And I'm unemployed. I do it because I want the businesses close to me to succeed. If they fail, the neighborhood fails.

"Tipping" a few basis points to my local firearms dealer on a gun purchase seems the least I can do.

I ain't saying pay abnormal market prices. I'm saying that if your local dealer has the gun you want for a few bucks more than you think is the reasonable street price, snag it. You'll feel good because you've helped sustain a vital element of your RKBA--your ability to buy firearms--and your dealer will live to see another day...plus be inclined to recognize you the next time you come into the store.

P.S. I know the title of this Topic is "AMMO," but since so many other Topics have been posted about ammo and ammo prices, I don't feel I could be off-topic here even if I tried. ;-)
