Have to agree Never use wd40. What it does is gum up or get thick like wax after it sits for a while. That can cause things to bind up. My father learned it the hard way. He sprayed a gun down with it. Then about a year later took it out. Was wrapped in a cotton diper. It looked like someone poured carmal over the gun. This was in the 70s so not sure if its the same mix. My father preached to me never to use that stuff. My father is a old school perfectionist. If the man tells ya something you can take it to the bank that its the truth. I use reg gun solvent Hoppes#9 and oil and have never had any issues. Field strip, solvent with patches first, then dry patches to dry everything and the a lite coat of oil and good to go. If its my carry gun I let it sit like this overnight and in the am wipe down any excess oil and put in the holster. Sorry had to get my WD40 word out also :tiphat:

Compressed ether is great for blowing grease and junk off steel. It will cut through any kind of crud and leave a completely clean and perfectly dry part. Anyone ever try it on a gun? Of course, ether must be used in this manner outside in complete ventilation and with no source of ignition nearby.

One caveat: Some modern ether products for automotive use may contain cylinder lubricants. While this does not leave a heavy residue, it could cause problems if not wiped off before assembly.
