The cost of 38 Special

I was floored at the price increase of 38 special. I have seen it range in price this last week (at Walmart) from $15.99 to $18.99. Just a few weeks ago I was paying $12.99-$13.99. I asked at Walmart just to make sure I wasn't crazy and they said the price went up to compensated because of the lack of .357 sales. That bites. Guess hubby better get busy reloading!

I believe you as to what they said, but I'm not sure what they said makes any sense. I think we are going to see escalating ammo prices over the next 6-7 months because we've got an election coming up and a very polarized nation. Those of us who think about it and can, are stocking up. Same thing happened in '08. I'm not saying whether it is necessary or unnecessary......but the race goes to the swift, and the battle to the prepared. Hopefully, there's no race and no battle, and we can all sit back with some coolaid and a bowl of popcorn to watch the festivities.

I bought 1K of Speer Lawman .38 special 158gr +P TMJ for 299 shipped a month or so ago from Ammoman.com. That's 14.95 per box of 50 shipped.

I thought that was a good price for +P TMJ for my Henry and my Rossi M92 Trapper for plinking (and whatever).

Unfortunately, that is not the shipped price.

Not sayin it's not good, just that it is not the shipped price and it is not a brand name factory loaded ammo.

Ammo is slowly going up. .38 special has never been as cheap as 9mm but when you consider how much more brass it uses it really is one of the more affordable rounds. That's why everybody should have a 9mm and a .22lr. .380acp is one of the worst when you consider bullet weight, powder and brass.

Sorry, I wasn't making a "coolaid commentary (or "Kool-Aide" if that's the proper spelling). I just randomly picked it as a beverage when I was typing. I actually considered saying "coke" or "beer" and the coolaid/Kool-Aide pun entirely escaped me at the time.

The thing I like about .38 or .357 is that I can reload it without chasing my brass all over the range. It is also very forgiving of imperfections in technique. Same for when I reload .44 special and 44 magnum. I have always had trouble reloading .45 and 9 mm. I don't really know what my hang up is, but for real I get feed problems every darned time I reload for semi auto. Anyway... Maybe get a simple reload set up for those .38 and . 357. I bet it won't take long to pay for the equipment... And it's fun to do. I also reload for my deer rifles.

Hubby is just learning the craft of reloading and only has a manual machine. Took him 2 hours to reload 50 and it will take me 15 minutes to use them.....Kinda equals cooking Thanks Giving dinner. Sounds fair.
