Another hallowed day in Texas History virtually ignored by the Austin media.

You know not being a native Texan I have always found it odd to celebrate the Alamo, a lost siege, and to virtually ignore San Jacinto, the greatest victory in Texas history and one of the greatest victories in American history. And yet that seems to be what we do!

If you want to here something really sad, San Antonio remembers San Jacinto Day every year, closes most of the city for it including city offices and schools, and still doesn't call it that. They celebrate it as Battle of the Flowers Day, named after the parade held each year as part of Fiesta on the Friday closest to San Jacinto Day.

The whole idea of the parade and the Fiesta started as a commemoration of the battle at San Jacinto and Texas freedom, and has since become a reason to celebrate all its own.
