I was wondering the same.

I've done some leather work over the years but I'm not claiming to be an expert. I took a holster making class at Tandy Leather a year or so ago. Their suggestion was to wet mold to the gun in the Ziplock freezer type bag. I tried it and it seemed to work well, but YMMV. I would think using an "well oiled" gun would allow excess gun oil to soak into the fibers of the wet leather leather and soften it to some extent. Most of the leather holster/belt makers' web sites that I've looked at strongly discourage using most type of leather conditioners and treatments for this very reason.

Some sites did recommend wrapping the gun in saran wrap instead of a bag as it is thinner and will not cause creases like a folded bag will.

But to be honest. No oil got into the leather except what I put into it. Oil has a very hard time penetrating water soaked leather. The wet leather prevents it from soaking in, and it was not like the gun is dripping with oil.

I sealed the holster in a three part mixture of bees wax, parafin wax, and mineral oil. It protects leather from water. I buffed it in and saw no change in softness of the leather.
Some people simply need a high five, to the face, with a chair!
