August 1959 Gun magazine

Post by puma guy »

I don't think this violates any rules - forum or legal. If so Mods please remove.
I found this searching for an old scope maker. Thought it would be interesting for some of you other old timers to peruse. The era is about the time I got interested in firearms. I read about everything I could get my hands on back then and probably read this one. There's a little blurb about John Russell, the actor, I particularly liked.

Now that was a great trip back in the time machine. Look at those gun prices! Browning Auto 5 for $129, Colt 1911s for $34.95. Of course, folks didn't make what we make now, but it's still fun.

I can't find a current address or phone number for Klein's Sporting Goods
There's an article about Smith and Wesson chambering their K-22 revolvers for the "new" Winchester .22 Magnum.

I thought "Kleins" rang a bell... That's where Lee Harvey Oswald mail ordered his Mannlicher.

Edited to add: The P-O-S (Pride of Spain) shotguns on page 11 are kind of humorous. Not sure why anyone would have picked that name. :headscratch
My guns won't be illegal, they'll be undocumented. :thumbs2:

After a quick search for "Klein's Sporting Goods" in Chicago, I found that they sold the mail order Carcano to Lee Harvey Oswald. One of those "cool" little historical tidbits.

Very neat to look through that, thanks for posting.

EDITED TO ADD: Looks like someone beat me to the punch while I was looking things up.

You both passed your history test. Klein's went out of business as a result of the GCA of 1968. The trail of the 6.5mm Italian Mannlicher-Carcano that the Warren Commission and FBI attributed to A.Hidell (Oswald) has, like the entire investigation, many questionable assumptions and inconsistencies. Some point to evidence there were two rifles with serial number C2766. BTW the price of the rifle with a mounted 4X scope was $19.95 plus $1.50 postage.

The GCA of 1968 put an end to most companies that dealt with mail order firearms.

In June of 1958 I got my first subscription to my own gun magazine, GUNS and remained an avid reader for year. Unfortunately I was away at private school (an experience I would never recommend) when the November issue came out, so I didn't have a chance to contribute a letter about my Spencer, or about woodchuck hunting. I let my subscription lapse during my time in the Navy and never renewed.

I love the Browning A-5 add:

"We could make it for less...but we won't."

You don't see many companies saying that these days.

And I'll take one of each from the Klein's ad.

The Pride of Spain ad made me laugh out loud in Starbucks.
