Cracking Windows 7 Logon Password

Saturday evening, my brother passed away
In his belongings, there are several items, but one is his mini-laptop, which is Windows 7.

It has a log on password and we do not know what it is.

So I am looking for ideas on how to get past the password to access the PC.

Any help is appreciated either in the open or on PM

If you are knowledgable and have done this before, and are local to the Houston (Clear Lake preferably, but anywhere I suppose in Houston) where I can meet up with you, can do that also.

It takes a CD-ROM drive (whether an internal unit or an external USB-connected) and a boot CD with utilities that allow you to reset the password. Here are links to a number of different options out there:

You may have to fiddle with BIOS settings on the laptop to get it to boot from an external USB drive before you can use one of the above.

If you don't get a response from somebody in the area, resetting the password on a machine to which you have physical access isn't difficult. I'll attach a youtube video that shows two methods. The first method is very simple and somebody with very little "computer" skills will be able to use it.

I am sorry for your loss. In most cases the local Administrator account is left enabled and without a password. You can tell by booting the pc up to the logon screen and then pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. Another screen will then appear allowing you logon as another user. Replace the current user with Administrator and leave the password blank and attempt a logon. If it works you may then reset any account you wish with a known password. If it doesn't pm me and I'll send (mail) you a USB stick that will start the system, load the registry hive and allow you to change or create a local administrator level user that will in turn grant you root access to the system.
If all of this is too much other options exist. First, any local pc tech shop that you trust can do this. Trust is the operative word here. Second, you could remove the disk, place it in an external enclosure from Best Buy or Fry's and attach it to another host system and get access to the data. This isn't as clean as having direct access, but it works as long as the files aren't encrypted.
Anyone with physical access to this system, should be in and sipping their coffee within 5 minutes. It is that easy.

It just so happens, that 3 weeks ago my son asked me to get into an HP Micro laptop with windows 7.

I couldnt believe how relatively quick and easy it was.

In this video i reset windows 7 password without third party sofware. To do it, I modified SETHC AND CMD files in the System32 folder to be able to pull up the command prompt at the windows log on screen.

I did this to access files of an employee who left our company and had important files on their system.
Works great for accessing files, but less useful if you need to try and recover logins to other things such as mail and other online accounts. For that you need to be able to log in as the user.
