It's hard for me to imagine it all coming down to a shooting without the ex-leo providing some verbal provocation with his words and possibly with his actions as well. Domestic disputes can be nasty for on duty, uniformed LEO. Interjecting himself into an already heated discussion between the parents is not a good place for a current boyfriend to tread. With the two children being there and most probably seeing and hearing it all, at 9 and 13 years old their versions of what was said then done probably filled in quiet a few blanks the ex-leo may have left unanswered.
However it turns out it's so sad the children had to witness their father being shot and killed, regardless of who was at fault.

What I think, given your set of circumstances, is that the mother should have called the Denton PD somewhere between San Angelo and Denton and advised them of the meeting, location, and time. Advised them there there is the history/possibility/likelihood of trouble with the "ex" and requested them to please have a unit standing by close in case there was. If I had been the boyfriend especially with his LEO background, I would have insisted on it. In my opinion, that'd be the surest way to be back home this Mother's Day without pending criminal charges and with whole lot more money available to have taken her to dinner with. Seems like a no-brainer to me.Photoman wrote:I don't know the facts of this case, but I can imagine scenarios...
Let us say, for example, the other man has a history of domestic violence/physical abuse/assault that I know about and he threatens to shoot me, holding his hand in his jacket pocket while rushing toward me. I haven't seen a gun.
Do you think I should shoot or not?

Re: Denton Shooting...anyone seen this yet?
having been in a child custody exchange VERY similar to this.....I am gonna hold out judgment on this guy until ALL the facts are out.
In the situation I was involved in: I had firsthand experience with my Ex's violent behavior. I had been the subject of his verbal death threats and destruction of property due simply to the fact that (at the time) I was dating his ex wife. He had initiated several up close and personal verbal exchanges (ie..ranting tirades on his behalf) with me. Frisco was aware of this behavior, along with that directed toward my wife...and did ABSOLUTELY nothing about it "because domestic/divorce situations are really a grey area for us".
One Saturday morning we had agreed to drop her with him at a bank/grocery store parking lot up the road from our house (lots of high quality cameras). The drop off went off without a hitch...all was well until he started to drive off. As he passed my truck, going opposite direction driver side to driver side, maybe 6' between vehicles, I looked in the mirror to watch him. As soon as his drivers door made it to my rear bumper I saw his arm throw the truck in park. At the same time he threw the door open and dismounted the vehicle. I was sitting in my truck buckled in, window down, and in park, and he closed the gap to my door FAST!!! When he got to my door he made an attempt to grab my seatbelt to keep me from moving and at the same time throw a punch. What he got was the door frame in his face....and himself vigorously placed back in his vehicle and told to leave. Could he have done serious bodily harm to me..SURE. Could he have had some sort of weapon that wasn't immediately visible...sure. He had threatened my life as recently as the week before. Would I have been justified in using deadly force to defend myself????
He then drove across the parking lot and called the police and made a claim that I assaulted him. I had not uttered even a single word to the guy during the exchange...never even made eye contact with him until I set about returning him to his truck. HE and HE alone initiated the entire conflict. HE had been the one that had repeatedly threatened my life, and that of my wife. HE had been arrested numerous times for DV and assault. Yet when the police arrived I was "detained" for questioning
until they were satisfied that things went down like I had described.
So...with all that being said.....DON'T convict the guy for what is being portrayed in the media. They are in the business of selling the ad space alongside these "SENSATIONAL" stories....NOT getting the story told correctly.

I cannot shake the thought that the mother could have orchestrated this whole thing.
