You probably never had so many people asking what kind of anti-tank gun you were firing at the range though.

I got my M44 at Big5 2 years ago for $75. I took it to a gunsmith I trust and had him check it out to make sure it was safe to fire, etc. It is way fun to fire.

Big5 advertises MN rifles/carbines quite often and I'm getting a 91/30 next to drop into a synthetic stock from CTD.

Way back when I lived outside Hot-lanta, me and two buddies found a guy with a barrel of M-N's at a gun show. I think he was asking like $75 a piece. We bought 3 (after picking the best bores, we had a bore light with us) and got them for $50 (or so, it's been a LONG time). Bought some ammo at another table. Went to the closest guys home and cleaned them up a bit. Went out to shoot them. But the first time we fired each of them we wrapped them in a welding blanket in case they went BOOM in a bad way. Neither did. Few months later we went hunting white tail deer. One guy had his and took a deer. It knocked the deer about 3' backward into a pine tree and darn near field dressed it in the process. I still have mine but haven't fired it in quite a while. They're fun to shoot at dusk when you can get the fireball effect. And yes, they're not easy on the shoulders.

I'd have zero problem removing the steel butt-plate and replacing it with a recoil pad (unless it were some crazy-rare collector's version).

You can skip a step with one of those slip-on recoil pads, and move it from gun to gun if you've got more than one with a lot of recoil.

G26 and I tried one out on the 44. Made a huge difference. Still have a small bruise from trying to shoot it au natural. Eh but it's part of the fun.

You can try this recoil pad. Yes it does use the original screws after you remove the metal plate. I got it from Amazon. The page describes it as M44, but it will fit a 91/30 (even says so in the instructions). Maybe with slight adjustments depending on your rifle. Still a little stiff, but someone recommended drilling a few of holes all the way through.
