Christmas pistol shopping?

I've been informed that I need to come up with some pistols for a potential present, to me. (yes, I love my wife.)

I'm thinking maybe a Glock compact in .45 or 10mm. But have no idea on prices or places to buy.

Springfield XD compact .45 maybe. But once again no idea on prices or places to purchase.

Any suggestions in compact high powered pistols, in about $600 median range?
Going to stay away from the .357 Sig caliber for now. Just too expensive to shoot and reload. Got 1911, don't need another.

I mentioned something about a Ruger MKIII in a 6 7/8 stainless for starting Bullseye, and I may be surprised with that, and no other input that I might have. Any good place to purchase one of those?

I have a Glock 30, and really like it. It conceals easily, even though people seem to think it's "porky". Capacity is 10 +1. The perceived recoil is the softest of the 45s I've shot far (compared to Colt Defender, Springfield 1911 compact).
Academy sports list the 30 at $547. I've seen them for a 20-30 less than that at gun shows. I bought mine like new factory refurb with night sigths for around 470.

Sig came out with the model 250,it is a modular platform that you can buy different grip sizes length of barrels and calibres for,i fondled one at the gunshow and the dak? trigger pull was really nice smooth with a crisp break at around i would guess 4 1/2 #

Well, if $600 is the median, with the low end being zero, then this might fit the budget. It's certainly high-powered, and you can use the hulls for shot glasses to dull the pain in your wrists afterward.

well, I'm looking for a full time carry, and the ad it says that pistol is for backup.

Both are great choices and I have both. Price range of under 600.00 is also good for both. 480.00 to 550.00 rande should do for either depending on accesories (night sights and such)

I had to have a discussion with myself about the feeding costs over the last few days for a 10mm.
Whatever I get I plan to shoot, often. At least 400 rounds a month. More than that if I use it in "games". I am under the impression that 10mm has a really short lifespan for reloading, and is pretty expensive otherwise.
Other than that I would really love to have one.

I was just now looking at http://www.ammoman.com for prices and the 10mm and .45 are about the same. Maybe cheaper than .357 mag. hmmm

Ya know, one consideration about populating your collection is the idea of planning a "carry pair": a service model (4" or 5") barrel that can be used as a primary carry and in IDPA, and a subcompact BUG that can both use the same magazines. As an example, I have a Glock 22, 27, and 35. The little guy comes with two, 9-round mags that fit flush into the frame, and his larger brothers use a 15-round standard mag. The larger mags work just fine in the subcompact.

Saves on magazine purchases because they do double duty. And your practice is transferable: if you carry the 15-round mags on your hip, and that's what you practice with, even if you switch to the subcompact the magazines, the mag carrier, the magwell opening--all are identical.

I don't personally know if I'd consider a 10mm subcompact...especially one I'd plan to put 400 or 500 rounds through per month. My little G27 feels a lot snappier than the G22, and a lot snappier than my 3-inch barrel .45. The SAAMI pressure level for .45 ACP is 21,000 PSI, for .45 ACP +P 23,000 PSI, for .40 S&W 35,000 PSI, and for 10mm 37,500 PSI. I'm not saying the 10mm would necessarily be uncomfortable to shoot for you--everybody's different. But if it were me I'd sure want to go the range and put a hundred down the pipe on a BUG-sized 10mm before I made my decesion...and recognize that the life expectancy of the 10mm is probably shorter than a lower-pressure load would be. That said, the G29 is noticeably larger than the G27 (it does qualify as a BUG under IDPA rules, but barely) and never having shot one, that additional size may make a significant difference.
