RED FRIDAY
This is not exactly CHL related persay, but it is what made our country great.
This is a copy of an e-mail given to me in print.
Here is something for you to consider doing. Maybe you have already heard of this.
Red Friday
Last week while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?
No, I'm escorting a solider home.
Going to pick him up?
No, he is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I'm taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the solider, he had delivered the news of his passing to the Soldiers family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand and said Thank You. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.
Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in you seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow solider. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."
Without a sound all went as requested. I noticed the Sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So here's a public thank you to our military men and women for what you do so we can live the way we do.
Now about Red Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for god, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday-- and continues each and every Friday until all the troops come home, sending a deafening message that.. Ever RED BLOODED AMERICAN who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV-- Let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a home coming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know that the once "silent majority" is on their side more that ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a Solider says when asked "what can we do to make things better for you?" is... " We need your support and your prayers."
Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.
IF YOU AGREE-- SEND THIS ON.
IF YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS THEN HIT THE DELETE BUTTON.

Ok. First, let me say that I agree with the message.
However, in this post, the word 'shoot' appears frequently in different contexts. Many of the usages just don't make sense to me.
Is this a case of spell check run amok?
It seems that shoot was substituted for 'Sergeant.' (guessing on that one), 'sit', 'short', 'seat', 'support', and 'silent'.

The above was the original portion of my reply.
When I hit Preview, the forum software immediately 'corrected' six correctly spelled, different words and substituted with the word shoot.

It is totally frustrating trying to read the forum today. Censorship usually has side effects worse than the occassional adult word slipping through. It is really a shame the above article was transformed into something practically unreadable.Mike1951 wrote:Ok. First, let me say that I agree with the message.

on Kerry http://www.richmond.edu/~ebolt/history3 ... imony.html
Pay particular attention to when then Lt. Kerry states that American servicemen had "personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country."
and what he said about our troops today;
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_120405.pdf
JOHN KERRY: I don't agree with that. But I think what we need to do is recognize what we all agree on, which is, you've got to begin to set benchmarks for accomplishment; you've got to begin to transfer authority to the Iraqis, and there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, uh-uh-uh, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the -- of -- of -- of -- historical customs, religious customs, whether you like it or not. Iraqis should be doing that. And after all of these two and a half years, with all of the talk of 210,000 people trained, there just is no excuse for not transferring more of that authority.

I had not heard about this, thanks for posting it. I will pass it on to some folks. I am one that is tired of all the bad stuff about the troops that we get from the news. It's like they are not part of this country, they try to tear it down instead of helping build it up.

Sorry, that was my mistake. I included an abbreviated profanity that used "*" in the word censor without thinking. I should have known that it would treat the “* as a wildcard and would change everything that began with "s" and ended with "t" to "shoot." I'm glad LT caught it early.Mike1951 wrote:Ok. That was my fault; see my post above as to how that happened. LT deleted the word censor and that corrected the article, so the problem should not be repeated.Liberty wrote:It is totally frustrating trying to read the forum today. Meaning no disrespect, I don't consider prohibiting profanity censorship, at least not in the traditional sense of restricting discussion of ideas. I admit that I should have given more thought to the effect of that particular use of a wildmask/wildcard in the word censor, but that doesn't mean the goal of the "10 year old daughter rule" thwarts open discussion of topics and ideas.
