France: Jeweler arrested for shooting fleeing robber
Re: Jeweler arrested for shooting fleeing robber
Sounds to me the relentless pursuit of the criminal is nothing more than another French lie they just want to punish the guy defending himself and his livelyhood
Re: Jeweler arrested for shooting fleeing robber
France has very strict gun laws. The gun the jeweler was using was illegally owned. They also don't have a fleeing felon law, so bottom line he broke a lot of laws.
My daughter spent 6 weeks there this summer on a study program. She came in from school one afternoon to find the host family's son with some of his friends shooting a pellet rifle in the backyard. They were not hitting the target well and some of them didn't even know how to properly aim. My 4' 11" 85lb daughter took the rifle and fired 5 shots all in the bull from about 20 yards. The boys were all dumbfounded about the fact she knew how to shoot. She then told them her Dad was a certified handgun instructor and she had been taught to shoot and shot since she was little.
She never shot a lot, but she knew how and was good at it. She then proceeded to show them the proper method holding the firearm, sight alignment, breathing and trigger control. After that, they got into a discussion of gun ownership and what was allowed and what wasn't in France vs. the U.S. She told them that we were allowed to own all types of guns and that with training and certification even a civilian could get a license to carry a pistol concealed. They were all fascinated by it. They all said they wanted to move to Texas. However, Dad is not sure if it is because they could own guns here or that the Daughter is here.

Apparently, there is outrage that the jeweler will be prosecuted. I wonder if they will be labeled gun nuts!

Surprisingly most French citizens love Americans and America, the Parisians just don't. Apparently from their attitude they don't like anything.Robert*PPS wrote:Apparently, there is outrage that the jeweler will be prosecuted. I wonder if they will be labeled gun nuts!

My daughter said the family she lived in Lyon with would love for their country to become more westernized like America. She said she heard this from many in people she interacted with in France outside of Paris.

Those are not mutually exclusive. If fact, being able to own guns in a state that has women who know how to shoot would be a double bonus.Keith B wrote:... However, Dad is not sure if it is because they could own guns here or that the Daughter is here.![]()

My personal experience and those of my friends square with what your daughter reported. There does seem to be a great divide between the Parisians and the rest of the country, and I suspect the vast majority of their national government is Parisian. The countryside seems much friendlier.
About the OP: This interesting: "... a protest by hundreds of Turk's [the shopkeeper] supporters."
Also this: "[The dead robber's family's lawyer said] "They don't understand how people can react this way. They haven't yet buried Anthony, and there's this protest."
This "lack of understanding" by the family might explain why their boy had 14 convictions, was barely out a month from his last stint, and had recently cut off his electronic bracelet when he decided to launch an armed robbery with a shotgun and beating of the victim.

Re: Jeweler arrested for shooting fleeing robber
Technically the Jeweler is a criminal too, at least in that country. He was a criminal before he fired that gun.JP171 wrote:Sounds to me the relentless pursuit of the criminal is nothing more than another French lie they just want to punish the guy defending himself and his livelyhood
What I see here is an opportunity for advocates to show statistically that down economies and hard core gun control equal more crime... The article seems to point out that shop owners are pretty easy targets.
