Appropriate compensation for the role and in line with similar organizations.

Re: What Did You Do In The Reloading Room This Week?

Any reason you don't use a cheapo prochrono off amazon? It's like $80 for the chrono and $30 for a tripod. Beats the heck out of guesswork.

Re: What Did You Do In The Reloading Room This Week?

How are you measuring velocity at 300 yards but not the muzzle? Won't a LabRadar give you a distance vs velocity plot? I may be missing something. In other news, I built a bunch of rule bending loads for USPSA. I got an extended and ported Barsto .40 barrel for my X5, and loaded 135 gr Nosler JHPs w...

Re: new hi power clone

Some might argue that nearly all pistols sold today are Hi-Power clones. My dad taught me to shoot on a Belgian Hi-Power. The P226 is, in my view, the summit of Browning and Saive's masterpiece. The Hi-Power, like the 1911, suffers from an odd safety dictated by dated military doctrine. Field stripp...

Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales seems like it'll be hard to overcome. Lot of the same justices, and first case was 7-2.

Re: Former chief of the Texas Rangers thinks 2A is about hunting

Our mental health system stopped trying to protect us from people who are not well. Our criminal justice system is preoccupied with prosecuting drug use. There are a lot of people on the street who need to be locked away. Working in the TDC hospital, I was never afraid or worried about the guys who ...

Do those bolt speed difference translate into real changes in parts wear or reliability?

Re: Lead Free Primers

I have tons of Longshot and a bit of 800X. My usual target load is a 115 gr HDY HAP over 8.5 of Longshot. I'll also try my .40 S&W match loads (135 gr Nosler JHP over 9.5 of Lonhshot, which just makes Major PF). The paper complaining if ignition delay claimed at 4ms is the military limit, and that t...

Re: 308 bolt gun or 308 AR

A good bolt .308 is a gun that you'll never stop using so ling as you shoot. A model 700 isn't my favorite, but it's the de facto standard and does just fine unless you get into dangerous game or very heavy calibers. A new barrel, good trigger and glass bedded stock will make it a tack driver that c...

Re: Lead Free Primers

Edited for double post. Both of my chronos calculate SDs, though I generally use a stats program on my phone by typing in the readouts. I agree that ignition delay should be apparent in velocity variation, but some studies have shown a consistent 50-75ms delay that only really varies with temperatur...

Re: Lead Free Primers

I'll definitely watch velocities. The other issue is ignition delay, and it's hard to measure that. Finally, sure reports call them sensitive to temperature and humidity variation.

Re: Lead Free Primers

The meta-analysis that I reviewed compared instructors using jacketed and cast bullets and found a small difference, but the n was only 2. For pistol, I load Hornady HAP, so no exposed lead at the base. I do pan to use FMJ for my carbine, so that vaporization may be an issue. The thing that scared m...

Lead Free Primers

I read a review article recently summarizing blood lead levels for various shooters and found that most of those tested were higher than I care to be. Shooting more, getting into USPSA and hopefully 3 gun, I want to be sure that I'm not doing anything foolish. I plan to get a lead level checked, and...

Re: Recommendations for a .308 with Detachable Magazine

An old Rem M700 with a new barrel and a magpul hunter stock and bottom metal won't be terribly expensive and will shoot very well. The trick is to find an old short action M700 action in good shape in a rifle that has seen better days. I just did this for my dad and I think the total cost came in at...
