I got my plastic so I could have a better chance against rattlesnakes since I retired and moved to the country.
When 'I was younger I had 2 robbers put me on the floor with a gun to my head once, and 5 armed robbers another time, and got held at knifepoint by a guy in a college parking lot .... but now there's SNAKES !!! Also rabid skunks, 2 rabid foxes, 1 rabid horse and a rabid mule in my nearby area, and a baby skunk got in my brother's house weeks ago ...So, I got my license.... I have recognition/an award.
Also, if I'm off fishing in a real secluded area and fall down a cliff etc and get hurt ... it can make more noise than my whistle to attract attention so I can be found and helped, and protect me from a bobcat etc while doing so. (Bobcats are pretty, and fairly small like a large house cat, but much more interesting looking really pretty, but never try to pet one ... don't ask how I know this)
